Per the PG, the Penguins are now close to signing former Blue's defenseman Jay McKee.
McKee is a big, 6'4 203 pound defensemen who was a former first round pick of the Buffalo Sabers back in 1995. Not seeing the Blues much really takes away from going in depth with what I think he brings to the team, but he seems to be a very good signing for the Pens, especially since the Blues have to pick up two-thirds of his $4 million salary this coming season.
The Penguins are looking to sign McKee to a one year deal.
McKee has never scored more than 17 points in his NHL career, but that is ok since he isn't being brought in to score. He is coming in to play a defensive role and block shots.
Pat Morris, McKee's agent had this to say in the PG also: "When the Penguins come calling, it catches your attention," Morris said of the recently crowned Stanley Cup champions. "I think there are things he does well that the Penguins like. He can be a shutdown guy."
When people start saying stuff like that you know the organization is top notch. That is why players want to come to Pittsburgh and why players regret not staying when they leave.
Here is the Penguins preseason schedule:
Friday, Sept. 18, Toronto at Pittsburgh, 7:30 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 21, Pittsburgh at Montreal, 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 22, Pittsburgh at Toronto, 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 24, Pittsburgh at Columbus, 7:00 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 25, Columbus at Pittsburgh, 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 27, Pittsburgh at Detroit, 5:00 p.m.
Interesting that the Penguins are playing the Wings. Really? Did this need to be done? I wonder how many fans are going to show up for that one. The Penguins should just pull up every WBS Baby Pen to play in that game and put a note up in the Joe that says "we are too good to play against you." Interesting preseason though.
