Rupp Sucks. Pens Win

What a game. If I told you that the Penguins win 5-2 and only three players would score goals in the game you probably would have said I was crazy. Hell, I would never had said something like that. I am not crazy.

Mike Rupp set a new career high in goals in a season and he scored a hat trick tonight. What a player. He was happy as shit when he threw the puck into the empty net from behind the Penguins blue line.

The Rangers came out just buzzin. MAF did everything he could to keep the Penguins in this game. The Rangers always play the Penguins tough in MSG but tonight was different. The Penguins weathered the storm and made the Rangers pay for their inexperience on the blueline.

The Rangers opened up the game on top when Marion Gaborik scored his 20th goal of the season. Things did not feel good in my stomach, and it wasn't because of two hotdogs I had just eaten.

How the Penguins respond would be a tall tell sign of how...

11 seconds later the most overrated player in hockey scores. Man he has really been hurting the Penguins.

A few minutes later it was a thing of beauty when Jordan Staal wins the faceoff forward from the right offensive zone circle and backhands it across the crease and finds Mike Rupp who goes backhand, save, backhand, score.

The Rangers fight back late in the period and get the power play on a terrible call on Sarge for "holding the stick". Actually the only reason the penalty was called was because the Rangers fans were booing because Crosby wasn't called for a trip (which was actually a Rangers player diving). Bullshit call.

Gaborik, score.

2-2 at the end of the second period. The first goal of the third was going to be huge. The Penguins just came to play. They burried the Rangers.

Mike Rupp set a new career high with his seventh goal of the season 11 mintues into the period. Cash.

A one goal lead in the NHL doesn't mean shit anymore. That is why it would be huge to get another goal and not even toy with the notion of giving a point to the Rangers. We know what those points will mean at the end of the season.

The Rangers ice the puck, have to keep tired bodies on the ice. Sid wins the faceoff, goes to Skoula then to the right point to Eaton who just throws a shot on net, redirected by Sid. 4-2. What an overrated player. He never gets big goals.

Father time shows up at MSG and most of the fans are out of the building already. What a bunch of jokes. Go watch the Giants or Jets suck now.

Lundy gets pulled and Disco throws Rupp out there. From way downtown. Bang.

This was the first time I ever saw Disco Dan with any emotion on the bench. He was grinning from ear to ear when Mike Rupp came to the bench after the ENG. That is how you get players to play hard for you. Fourth line guy has two goals, and does not score much, yet he throws him out there with Sid at the end of the game to give him a chance to get the hatter.

Other Stuff

Sid gets two goals and an assists. That is five goals in the last two games. Money.

The Rangers have given up 18 goals in their last three games. What on earth is wrong with that team? Sure the defense is young and inexperienced but come on.

The Penguins totally controled the second period. 14 shots but it seemed like 50

33 shots for the game. Remember when the Penguins couldn't buy 30 shots in a game?

MAF has now run off five straight wins. Remember when he wasn't a big time goalie? that was a big time win tonight.

Penguins Game Day 28 - @ New York Rangers

New York Rangers

7:00 PM, Madison Square Garden, New York, New York

The Penguins return to the ice tonight after playing the same Rangers team like 15 minutes ago. The last time these two teams played it kinda went like this:

I am pretty sure that the Rangers will be ready when they step onto the ice at MSG.

Matt Cooke will not be in the contest tonight thanks to getting suspended by the NHL for his hit on Artem Anisimov. Mike Richards had about the exact same hit earlier in the season and he got a slap on the wrist. But I guess we didn't have the services of the suspension flow chart.

The Penguins are not very good at MSG so I really wouldn't be surprised if they struggled tonight. All I hope is that I don't have to hear that God awful goal song that they play. Man, do I hate that.

Henrik Lundqvist is gonna be in goal for the Rangers as he is 12-1-1 with a 1.67 goals-against average and two shutouts in 14 home starts against the Penguins.

Double-D's, Steelers Lose

The Steelers dropped tonights game to the Ravens. Boy was it tough. The game was all about how the Steelers would do with their third string QB in the lineup and they faired pretty well. It was an ill-timed INT in overtime that did the Steelers in. When Baltimore comes to Pittsburgh it is going to be an entirely different game. That game will probably determine the Wild Card seed.

The Heat Is On. Pens Win

Oh man. THAT was great.

Sid gets five points. New York is reeling. Philly still sucks.

I am sure everyone saw what this tool bag Tom Awad wrote about how Sid is actually huring the Penguins, well he is hurting us pretty bad.

You know how you know that Sid is a big deal? Some douche writes something like that then Sid comes out and shits all over his parade. Tom, Sid said you were right, suck it.

Here is Sid's HT. Watch at the 2:35 mark. Matt Cooke calls Crosby over and says "It's f'in hat night" How priceless is that? I laughed so hard.

Steelers Game Day 11 - @ Baltimore Ravens

We are going to do things a little bit different here today for our pregame Steelers post. I am going to throw out the statistical part, throw out what teams did last week and who gives a shit about the history of the two teams and what they have done this season.

This is the Baltimore Ravens we are talking about.

How bad do you just want to punt one of these?

We just found out Friday into Satursday that Ben is not going to be playing. He got a few headaches and he and the Steelers, decided it would be best for him to sit down for the contest. Couple that with the fact that Charlie Batch is down for atleast a couple weeks with a broken wrist we have our number three QB, DD's, starting for us.

For those of you that don't know DD's that is Dennis Dixon.

Dennis has only thrown one pass in his short NFL career, but he will basically be all we have on Sunday. He goes down and Hines Ward will probably have to come in and play some ball for us. You know what, I don't care. The defense is sure as hell going to have to step up and make some shit happen. Without Troy in the lineup Ty Carter is going to have to play to the level he did when Ryan Clark was on the sidelines in Denver.

Stop the run. Make Joe Flacco beat us and let 92 and 56 pin their ears back and get after Joey. Flacco hasn't been playing ball like he was at the beginning of the season so its not like we are facing the greatest offense since sliced bread like some people wanted you to think earlier in the season.

If you need to come here and have me remind you what this game means to Steelers Nation then you need to quit watching football all together. Games like this are what its all about. You remember when you used to play your big rival when you were like 8 or something and you still thought you could play. Magnify that by a million and that is what this game is.

It is going to take a complete team effort to get this win. Going into a hostile environment. The Steelers D is going to be relied on heavily and they will show up to play. They also do in big games. Dennis Dixon will do the job. He wouldn't be there if the Steelers didn't believe he could play. I don't usually drop the f bomb on here but sometimes it is needed. Lets get behind our team and lets get this fucking win and shut up every critic of this team. Here we go.

Do it.

Penguins Game Day 27 - vs. New York Rangers

New York Rangers

7:30 PM, Mellon Arena, Pittsburgh, PA

The Penguins return to the ice after dropping their contest to the other New York team, the Islanders, yesterday 3-2. The Pens blew a 2-1 lead only to watch the Islanders and Taveres come back and beat them.

Here are the lines for the Penguins from their website:

Forwards

Talbot-Crosby-Guerin
Dupuis-Malkin-Fedotenko
Cooke-Staal-Bourque
Rupp-Adams-Godard

Defense

Gonchar-Orpik
Eaton-Letang
Skoula-Goligoski

Fleury

What do you notice about the lineup? Oh yea, Gogo and Tanger are back in the lineup. Oh how sweet it is when you start to get everyone healthy.

Lets not all get excited like all the Penguins problems will be fixed today. Sure they are both back but you have to keep things in perspective. They have no played in weeks. There will be rust and it will take them some time to get back into the flow. Sure, they have been practicing but nothing, not even practice, can simulate game speed and situations.

Now this is a huge pickup. Both Lovejoy and Engelland have been reassigned to WBS so we know for sure both Gogo and Tang are going to play. This was a great story to read when I woke up, after I found out Ben was out for the Steelers game.

The Rangers have slipped off since their red hot start of the season. They won seven of their first eight games but have not been able to play .500 hockey since then. They are currently 13-11-1 overall and only 6-6-1 on the road.

Good news for the Penguins is that MAF is just straight cash money at Mellon Arena against the Rangers. In his last 15 games at the Igloo MAF is 13-0-2 against them. I think that is a pretty good omen. Lets get back on the winning ways.

Lets Go Pens.

Penguins Game Day 24 - vs. Montreal Canadians

Montreal Canadians

7:30 PM, Mellon Arena, Pittsburgh, PA

The Pittsburgh Penguins are coming off a thrilling win over the Florida Panthers 3-2, a game in which overrated Sidney Crosby scored two goals.

Here is what I think the lines will be. Same as Florida.

Forwards
Talbot-Crosby-Guerin
Dupuis-Malkin-Fedotenko
Cooke-Staal-Bourque
Rupp-Adams-Godard

Defense
Gonchar-Orpik
Eaton-Engelland
Skoula-Lovejoy

Netminder
Fleury

Tyler Kennedy and Kris Letang are back and skating in full practice. That is very encouraging. I like it.

Here is some scoop on the Canadians from their website.

CANADIENS (12-11-1) at PENGUINS (16-8-0)

Last 10 -- Canadiens 5-4-1; Penguins 5-5-0

Season series -- The teams are meeting for the second time this season, both in Pittsburgh. The Penguins routed Montreal 6-1 at Mellon Arena on Oct. 28, with Sidney Crosby getting a hat trick. The Penguins go to the BellCenter on Dec. 10 and Feb. 6.

Big story -- Both teams are scrambling to deal with a plethora of injuries -- and doing pretty well at it. The Canadiens have been riding the goaltending of Carey Price, who's 3-0-1 in his last four games -- including a 5-3 home victory over Columbus on Tuesday. The Penguins had five of their six regulars on defense sidelined last week; Sergei Gonchar and Brooks Orpik are back, but the Penguins have gotten production from replacements like Martin Skoula, who scored twice in Saturday's win over Atlanta.

Carey Price in net for the Habs makes me feel good. I do not think very highly of him and I think he has way more cracks that can be fixed this year. He had very lofty expectations when he came in a few years ago as the starting goalie and I just think he wasn't ready for those. The fans are very hard on him which is why he is 5-4 on the road this season and 2-4 at home. Is this the only reason? No. But I think there is some validity to the fact that he tries to impress those fans so hard that he just struggles.

This is the first of three games for the Penguins in the next four days. They play the Habs tonight, have off Thanksgiving then go back-to-back with the Islanders and Rangers. Gonna be a tough stretch. Tonight will be a good start if the Penguins can get a win.

Lets get it on.

Lets Go Pens

#ravenstahlrumors

I can't believe I haven't talked about this yet. As you may, or may not know, I have a twitter account (threeriversblog) and last night was one of the best Twitter nights of all time.

The boys over at the Pensblog started a hash tag because of Mayor Ravenstahl is getting divorced and nobody is real sure why. What do you do when you don't know why? You make rumors. Boy was this fun.

Ian and John over at Steeler n'at give you a recap of what a hashtag is on Twitter:

For those of you not familiar with Twitter, here's how the "hashtag" works. If you would like to start a topic for people to talk about, you put a # in front of it. For instance, in posts about the Steelers, you would say #Steelers, then anyone looking for posts about the Steelers could search by that tag and see all the posts (or "tweets") about it. Last night, the boys over at The Pensblog decided to start the #ravenstahlrumors hashtag with rumors about Mayor Luke.

Here are some of the best. I had to explain to my roommate from Minnesota what this was about. He really didn't understand. Good stuff.

Cats Tamed. Pens Win.

The Penguins used two points from Geno Malkin and a Sid Crosby power play goal in the overtime session.

The Penguins beat a hot Panthers teams that was 8-2-1 in their last 11. Well, make that 8-3-1.

Thomas Vokoun made 42 saves in net. He is the only reason this team even had a chance in this game. He is holding this Panthers team together. Vokoun has faced 36 shots a night this season and has a pretty nice GAA and save %. He will be the reason the team wins this season.

How God awful are the Panthers third jerseys? It is like they took the template of the Penguins throwbacks and had a blind kid paste their logo and pick the colors. Man, if they never wear these again I would be happy. Hell, I am not even a Pathers fan but I am pissed they did that.

Furthermore what the hell is wrong with FSN. I mean they have a power outage every single month and what happens when they come back? They have the Pathers ice girls doing a dance, at center ice, with the lights off. Now I am not sure if the lights being off was because of a power outage but from what I saw my college dance team was better than they were, and they sucked. This was horrid. Not only did I miss the last five minutes of the game but I had to watch that abomination.

Back to the game.

The Panthers came out and did some shit and scored a couple of goals by MAF. MAF played pretty well tonight and he really kept the team in the game once they were down by a few goals.

The Penguins pretty much slept walked through the first two periods and really didn't have much to offer. How many times have you seen the Penguins come back from a couple goals down to win?

The Penguins got on the board in the third when Pascal Dupuis took a shot from the right point and somehow it tipped up in the air and hit off of Vokoun and into the net. As the puck was goign in some Pathers knocked the goal off but it counts anyways.

I will tell you what, I have been sayind Dupuis has been a solid team guy thsi year, not everyone has agreed with me but with his play of late you have to give it to him. Every team needs a guy like Dupuis. Hard working, get into the corner and dig a puck out, speed, gritty, gets a point here and there. When you work hard you get goals like he did tonight. He doesn't have a great shot but he works hard and is a great fourth line guys and a guy that can fill in a top line when needed.

The Penguins then score again with a minute and a half left when Mike Rupp scores again. Mike freakin Rupp. How clutch has this guy been? He scored like three goals last year and he has five already. Shit we don't need Crosby or Geno, we have Mike Rupp.

Penguins go into overtime, and the Panthers commit a penalty. Orpik levels Nathan Horton and hit stick comes up and cuts Orpik. Now, the referee's don't see the high stick, but the linesman does. Rather than a delayed penalty situation the linesman goes to the referee's during the next stopage and tells him about the penalty. Horton goes to the box. Really strange.

Pens power play. Malkin shoots it. Rebound. Sid.

Cash.

Crosby is so overrated. How is he even a captain? We should trade him.

Detroit lost.

Suck it.

Lets Go Pens.

Steeler Lose to lowly Chiefs

What is there to say? I have no idea what the hell is going on. This could be worse, we could be the Browns. Hell, if we lose to the Browns then we have real problems.

515 total yards of offense and you don't win.

I have no idea.

No pictures for the post because I am sick of thinking about this game. Shit.

Steelers Game Day 10 - @ Kansas City

The Steelers might not have lost the AFC North Division last week with that loss to the Bengals then they are pretty close. The Bengals have the one game lead on the Steelers plus the tiebreaker so it is going to be pretty hard for the Steelers to come back and win the AFC North.

Now I am not saying that the Steelers are out of the race. There is still plenty of time for the Steelers to make a run, and overtake the Bengals. There are seven games left in the NFL season and there is a lot of changing that is going to be going on within the division and the conference.

The Steelers play the Chiefs this weekend. Now trying to hype up the Chiefs is about as easy as taking a Cleveland Browns fan seriously when they think they are going to make the playoffs at the beginning of the year. I will try my best. I guess

Penguins Game Day 22 - @ Atlanta Thrashers

Atlanta Thrashers

7:00 PM, Philips Arena, Atlanta, GA

Here are the early lines from the Penguins website:

Forwards
Fedotenko-Crosby-Malkin
Dupuis-Staal-Guerin
Cooke-Adams-Talbot
Bourque-Rupp-Godard

Defense
Gonchar-Orpik
Skoula-Lovejoy
Eaton-Engelland

Netminder
Fleury

Orpik will be back in the lineup tonight. Not sure if he is going to be with Sarge, but I would assume that is where he is going to be. Nice to finally see some of the defensive pairings back since the beginning of the year.

Fluery is back in after a pretty tough outing against the Senators. He got yanked in that contest and just had a bad day. If you thought he wasn't goign to have one of those games all season then you have never watched hockey.

This will not be the easy game most will think of. The Thrashers are playing very well this year as they are 10-6-2, not your typical Thrashers.

Just when you think I am kidding this is what I saw on ESPN's preview page:

Atlanta (10-6-2) has one of hockey's most consistent offensive attacks, scoring
3.61 goals per game to rank among the league's top three.

The Thrashers

Penguins Game Day 21 - @ Ottawa Senators

Ottawa Senators

7:30 PM, Scotiabank Place, Ottawa

The Penguins visit Scotiabank Place today to take on the Ottawa Senators. Should be an interesting contest as the Senators are reeling and the Penguins are starting to get some pieces back so it looks more like the team that started the season in the NHL rather than the team that started in Baby Pens uni's.

It was made official that Max Talbot and Sergei Gonchar WILL be in the lineup tonight for the Penguins. What a huge boost.

No lineups and I am busy. Short post today.

Blah, Blah, Blah

In the midst of my busy days and lack of games around here I have noticed that yet another Penguin has gone down. Jay McKee is going to be sidelined for two-four weeks with an infection in his finger. So we started with six defensemen on opening night: Orpik, Gonchar, Letang, Goligoski, McKee, and Eaton. As of right now Eaton is the only one that is healthy. Not very good.

The good news? Sarge, Orpik and Talbot are close to being back. It is thought that Sarge and Talbot could return on Thursday and Orpik could be back shortly there after. That might be some relief but I can't wait until December when they are all back and we have our team with us again.

Sid will carry the Olympic torch
tonight in his hometown. Why would they want him to do this? All he does in whine. Oh, and win a Stanley Cup, but who cares about that?

Special teams changes for the Steelers? Why would you want to do that?

Larry Johnson signs with the Cincinatti Bengals. The Bengals are really playing with fire here. Bensen is going to be on the shelf for a week maybe and he's back. I know you can't have too much talent but the Bengals do not have a great track record.

Are the Bengals the best team in the AFC North? In one word, yes. They beat the Steelers twice. Nothing more is said. It is still November so there is a lot of time. But for now they are the better team, they beat Baltimore and Pittsburgh all four times.

Troy's knee looks to be a lot better than most thought. Thank God. He will most likely sit out this week and be a week to week thing. Good. Coulda been a lot worse.

Quack Quack, Pens Win

I wasn't able to watch the entire game but from what I was able to see it was a very good game, from a very shorthanded team.

The Penguins jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead afer about six mintues and it was really over at that point.

The Ducks came out and scored a goal in the first to make the score 2-1 on a shortie from Todd Marchant but the Penguins clamped down and Jordan Staal returned the favor and got a shortie of his own early in the second period.

Martin Skoula scored his first of the season in the third to push the lead to 4-1 before Matt Cooke threw one into an empty net after a Ducks goal for the second win in as many days.

Deryk Engelland came in and got his first career point assisting on Jordan Staal's goal. Good for Deryk.

Although the Ducks are statistically the worst team in the West it was nice for the Penguins to come out and play solid hockey and dominate a team they were supposed to.

Mark Eaton really carried the load for the Penguin team tonight. Over 27 minutes of ice time and he was a +3 on the night. That is how you set up and how deep this team is. Eaton is a solid player that has really just got better every year.

MAF was solid too. He is not going to get a ton of shutouts but he is going to be solid. He will have games where he gives up two or three goals but he also plays pretty well. The Pens will get three or four goals and MAF will give up two or three and get the win. I am ok with that.

The Penguins resume later in the week but this was a real good win to get back on the winning track.

Reassessing the Steelers loss

Now the Steelers lost and it is going to be a shitty week for most of us that are the diehard Steelers fans. Especially for me since I work with a Bungles fan.

I will print this out for him:

Now I was sitting here and watching NCIS reruns, because Gibbs is a badass, and not watching football. I was on and off Twitter and thinking about the rest of the season. This is what it looks like down the stretch:

Now right now the Steelers are a 6-3 team and 1-2 in the AFC North. Here is how the standings look as of Sunday night after the Patriots/Colts game:

Right now, if the season ended today the Steelers are in the playoffs so in all reality they control their own destiny. They play a group of three teams (Oakland, Kansas City and Cleveland) that are a combined 5-21. I know you can't really count up wins before you play but I am going to because this is my blog and I can do what I want.

The Steelers beat those three bottom feeders. Nine wins. You then have four games against Green Bay, Miami, and two games against Baltimore. Nine wins before those games and all the Steelers have to do split the games with Baltimore, Green Bay and Miami. I think we can hadle that. 11 wins get us in the playoffs. Does not win the division, but it gets you in the playoffs. Once you get in, anything can happen.

We get in as a Wild Card and we most likely get to play the winner of the South. That is San Diego and Denver. Does that really scare you a lot? Not so much here. We owned Denver and San Diego so I think things are going to be alright.

I feel really good about this team and think they can make a lot of noise in the playoffs. Remember 2005? I do. This can be a lot like that. Struggle early and mid season and turn it on and play great football late in the season, when great football needs to be played. Lets get ready for Kansas City. Get your mind right.

Here We Go

FG City, Steelers lose.

The Cincinnati Bengals pretty much wraped up the AFC North today with a 18-12 win over the Steelers. Shit. I have no idea what to say. This was a very tough game to watch. Ben played bad, the offense palyed bad, there isn't really much to talk about. The Steelers will not be playing for the wild card spot out of the AFC. By no means do I think this is not a playoff team, because it is.

Game recap after the jump. It's mud, just like the Steelers today.

Steelers Game Day 9 - vs. Cincinatti Bengals

I know I come on here every week and talk about how big that weeks game is and how the Steelers have to win this one and this is the most important game of the season and blah blah blah. This is it. This is pretty much for the AFC North. The Bengals win and they will most assuradly win the AFC North and if the Steelers win they have just as much of a chance as the Bengals to win the division.

You already know this though. You know what this game means.

Remember how you felt when the Steelers lost to the Bengals last time? I do. I remember where I was and what I was doing. I was at a bar watching the game and I wanted to throw the food up that I just got done eating. It was gut wrenching. To top it off I had to hear all the "Who Dey" bullshit from a Bengals fan at work. Not again. Not with this team.

Heinz is going to be off the hook this Sunday. Sure its an early game. Doesn't matter. Lots will be full at 8:30 AM. This isn't Paul Brown with their weak "fans". This is the real fans and the Bengals will hear it. Hope they buckle up. The Steelers are coming.

Penguins Game Day 18 - vs. NJ Devils

New Jersey Devils

7:30 PM, Mellon Arena, Pittsburgh, PA

The Penguins come into tonight's game slumping a little bit. They have lost their last three games and they have also lost another player in their loss to the Boston Bruins..

Brooks Orpik will be out two weeks
with a "lower body injury".

Just add him to the list of players that are not playing. You know what though? It is not an excuse. This team can not look for excuses and has to realize that it is not a sprint, it's a marathon. Remember last year when people were laughing at the Penguins when they were outta the playoffs in February? I do. You know what month it is? November, and we are one of the top teams in the league. Everyone relax.

You know when thinking about it I would rather have a few guys out now, get a little rest, make sure they are ok and not rushing them back than to have them out in March and have to rush Tang, Geno, Sarge, and Talbot back to play for the playoffs.

The Penguins will welcome the Devils into the Igloo. They welcome Marty Brodeur and his 22-11 record at the Igloo. Not sure if he is going to get the start tonight but Brodeur made 31 saves last night in a 3-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks last night.

Brodeur and the Devils defense shut down the Penguins the last time they played. That was back in late October.

New Jersey is also reeling a little bit in the injury department. They will be missing Paul Martin, Jay Pandolfo, Johnny Oduya, Brian Rolston, and Rob Niedermayer. Niedermayer could be back tonight but no decision has been made.

The Devils are also 8-0-0 on the road and is two more road victories of tying the NHL record for best road start to start a season. I have a pretty decent feeling about the Penguins tonight. They haven't scored in seven periods and we do have some history in getting Marty yanked from games.

The Devils also bring one of the best player in the world to the ice tonight. He never gets mentioned but if there is one play I want on my team outside of Geno and Sid its Zach Parise. He is a beast and leads the team in goals (8), assists (11), and points (19). Keep him off the board and we should win. Book it.

The Penguins have recalled up Ben Lovejoy to be on the roster thanks to Brooks Orpik being on the shelf. From the lines you will see below I am not sure if he is going to play or not, but it is nice to have a guy like Lovejoy to be able to call up as an eighth defensemen. Not bad. Rather have Sarge and Tang but we have to make due.

The Penguins are not 0-23 since Geno left the lineup on the power play. A power play goal would be nice. I can't remember the last time we had a power play goal. Whatev. The sky isn't falling.

Here are the lines according to the Penguins website:

Forwards

Cooke-Crosby-Fedotenko
Kunitz-Staal-Guerin
Conner-Adams-Dupuis
Bourque-Rupp-Godard

Defense
Orpik-Engelland
Skoula-Eaton
Goligoski-McKee

Netminder

Fleury

Uh Oh. Geno and Talbot have the black jerseys on. For those of you who don't know this means they can be hit in practice. That means they are one step closer to coming back into the lineup.

Enough talk, lets get it done.

Denver fan, owning up

So I had an agreement with a friend from work. If the Broncos would have won, I would have had to wear a Broncos jersey for a whole day of work and post a picture of it as my Facebook profile picture for two weeks.

The Steelers won. She ate crow ad has to pay up. Here it is. Die Hard Bronco fan. Oh. Yea.

This is what you get when you doubt the Steelers:

Broncos Suck.

Here We Go.

LaRoche and Alverez

I know I haven’t been talking a lot of Pirates lately. Well with work and the Penguins and Steelers also in town so that gives me a lot to talk about. I could squeeze some things in about the Pirates but I mean when you have places such as WHYGAVS and Bucco Fans and Raise the Jolly Roger and North Side Notch and The Mc Effect that focus primarily on the Pirates then it is nice to not have to do a whole ton of off season stuff with the Pirates.

Today I figured I would put some time in and piece together some Pirates stuff and have some opinions about what is going on so far in the off-season.

The article that really got me going was this one from the Trib that said that Andy LaRoche was going to be up for a move when Pedro Alverez is up for good, if he plays third base.

He also praised Alverez and seems to realize that he is the future for the Pirates and that he might have to move his position to stay in the lineup.

LaRoche seems to think that Pedro will stick at third base and that his offensive production will outweigh what his shortcomings might be in the field.

This is awesome. You rarely see professional athletes take what is best for the team into account. He acknowledges that in order for this team to go where it needs to go that Pedro is going to be at third base.

That is why the most recent trade kind of didn’t make a ton of sense to me. I understand that Delwyn Young is not going to be the guy at second and that Pedro isn’t going to be up right away but is Iwamura going to be here a few more years? If LaRoche keeps playing like he finished the year last year then he would most likely move to second base. Maybe I am just looking too much into it.

It is refreshing to see players do this. A young guy who the team drafted first in your posisiton and you say you will move to another position to make the team better. I like it. I guess if this becomes a problem, who to put where, that it is a good problem to have. One that the Pirates haven’t had in a while.

Penguins Game Day 17 - @ Boston Bruins

Boston Bruins

7:00 PM, TD Bank Garden, Boston, MA

If you seriously thought the Penguins weren't going to lose two games in a row for an entire 82 game season than you haven't watched hockey in your entire life.

Disco got to the Penguins after Valentines Day last year and he has only lost like a combined 10 games since then. To be honest it is pretty remarkable we haven't had a long stretch of games in a row with a new coach and new system. Things like this happen during an 82 game season. It has happened before and this won't be the last time.

Here are the lines brought to you by the Penguins website:

Forwards
Cooke-Crosby-Fedotenko
Kunitz-Staal-Guerin
Conner-Adams-Dupuis
Bourque-Rupp-Godard

Defense
Orpik-Engelland
Eaton-Skoula
McKee-Goligoski

Netminder
Fleury

A big switch up in lines for tonight's game. Crosby wasn't getting it done with Kunitz and Guerin so he gets two new friends to play with. Tenk and Cook will team up with Sid. Tenk has been slumping big time so hopefully Sid can get him back into a groove to make up for the 27 players we are missing due to injury.

This is sort of old news but Tanger is going to be out for two weeks. He will be replaced by Engelland. To be honest this is kinda the best case for Tanger. When it was first out there that he was hurt most people thought this was going to be a four to six week thing. Two weeks seems light. Tang could miss around 8 games, which isn't even 10% of the season and by the time he is ready to come back so will Geno and Sarge will be right behind that. Looking good. Don't worry bout it.

An interesting fact that the Penguins website had was this:

2.38: The average number of goals scored per game by the Bruins in ’09-10, down almost a full goal per game compared to the 3.34 they averaged in ’08-09.

The Bruins have been strugglin a little bit. After a great start to last season and high expectations they failed. They are 7-7-2 this year so far and defeated Buffalo in their last match. They have some injury issues just like the Penguins.

Boston's best play in most regards, Marc Savard is out of the lineup along with David Krejci and Milan Lucic have been out.

Tim Thomas is still in net for Boston and to be honest I was never really sold on him. Just doesn't seem like the guy who can get you the big win. This season he is 4-6-1 with a 2.44 GAA and a .916 save percentage.

Should be an interesting game at TD. Hopefully the Penguins can get off their little two game losing streak. If they can't, no matter how the game goes, there will be people calling for Disco's head.

"Damn"

Steelers Game Day 8 - @ Denver Broncos

This will be another big game in as many games for the Pittsburgh Steelers as they go to Mile High to take on the Denver Broncos. The Broncos were unable to keep their undefeated record as they dropped a really ugly contest to the Baltimore Ravens last week as the Steelers sat at home and watch during their bye week.

Dick LeBeau had a full two weeks to game plan for the Broncos offense. An offense that is now headed by Kyle Orton. That is right, Kyle Orton. Dick LeBeau is the man when he has one week to prep. He gets two this week. Maybe one of the biggest games of the season when we look back at the end of the season.

Since 2002 the Steelers are 4-3 coming off bye weeks and won last years match over Cincinnati 38-10. There isn't much you can take from that but it is still pretty cool to look at.

Penguins Game Day 17 - @ San Jose Sharks

San Jose Sharks

10:30 PM, HP Pavilion, San Jose, CA

The Penguins finish their West Coast swing tonight when they go into the Shark tank to take on the San Jose Sharks.

The Pens are coming in after dropping their last contest to the LA Kings.

The Penguins have not won at the HP Pavilion in their last eight opportunities. Blah.

The line combinations from the Pens website:

Forwards
Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Cooke-Staal-Conner
Dupuis-Adams-Fedotenko
Bourque-Rupp-Godard

Looks like there will probably be no TK and possibly no Go-Go due to some unspecified things. Who knows. Deryk Engelland has been called up from WBS today so it seems as if Go-Go will be a no go, if you must. (pun was intended)

San Jose has had a great start to the season. They come in at 11-4-2 and 4-0-1 at home. They also have very good goaltending with Evgeni Nabokov. He has 10 wins for the Sharks and a 2.28 GAA.

Parick Marleau leads the team with 11 goals and 22 points to go along with top players like Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley, Dan Boyle, and Rob Blake.

Probably no post game post because I have to work late. But I will leave you with this:

Should be a good game.

News and Notes

Not a whole lot going on today. No Penguins, they lost last night, the Steelers don't play until Monday night. There is however stuff still getting done today. Turns out the world does not shut down on days like this. It should. But hey, at least we are not a Flyers fan.

The Steelers will not say whether Ryan Clark is going to play in Denver or not. I am ok with this. It is no secret that Clark probably will not play but the Broncos can't know that for sure. The Steelers are keeping this mum so the Broncos have to prepare for him. Although it might not seem like a lot, Clark is very important to this defense. He is good at what he does and Ty Carter will not play to that level. If the Broncos knew that Carter was going to start then they would most certainly come up with plays to attack Carter.

Along the lines of Mellon Memories, Seth from over at Empty Netters talked with Greg Malone and what he thought of the Igloo

Here is the [unnammed] Steelers Pregame show from the boys at OFTOT and PSAMP

Over at Pens Universe they had a chat with Pens prospect with Eric Tangradi. Good Stuff

From PSAMP: Nick Eason, an actor? You decide.

Is this the worst coverage unit that the Steelers have ever had?

What really happens at the bottom of those NFL piles?

Before we go I want to ask each and every one of you to say a small prayer for the people that have lost their lives in Texas and in Orlando with the shootings. Although this is a pretty lax blog we still have to sit back and reflect at times like this and be thankful for what we have. Nobody knows exactly why those people shot up those places but the people that were hurt did not deserve it. It is very unfortunate that this happens.

Power Outage, Pens Lose

You really couldn't expect it to last forever. I mean you start out 7-0 on the road and you are doing something right. You can't win them all on the road and when you play an up and coming team like the Kings you are going to have your hands full.

Also when you play terrible defense you will be vulnerable to giving up more goals than you score.

You might think that I am just saying this Kings team is up and coming because they beat the Penguins tonight. If you watched Anze Kopitar tonight then you are saying the same thing. If you aren't you 1) didn't watch the game or 2) don't know anything about hockey.

Kopitar was all over the place. He was nothing short of dominating tonight scoring the first two goals for the Kings. He was just gliding on the ice and made a sick move on Fluery for the first goal.

A huge part of the night was how god awful the defense looked. Someone forgot to wake Tanger from the nap he took before the game becuase he played about as bad of a game as he could. He also had the teams most TOI with almost 25 mintues of play. It was just a bad night all around.

MAF was strong for most of the game but he could not hold up for the full 60 mintues. The third period was just an onslaught by the Kings and they beat MAF four times. A lot of good shots by the Kings.

The Kings were just the better team tonight and without Geno, TK, Sarge there is only so much you can do. The Penguins can't win them all. Bounce back in San Jose. Four out of six points on the trip would be a trip that I think we can all say we were happy about.

Penguins Game Day 16 - @ LA Kings

Los Angles Kings

10:30 PM, Staples Center, Los Angles, CA

The Penguins will take the trip to LA to take on the Kings after they captured a thrilling 4-3 win over the Ducks of Anaheim on Tuesday night.

The Penguins are doing a nice job of picking up the slack since missing Geno and Sarge with Dupes, Tanger, Go-Go and Rupp scoring the four goals to give the Guins the win on Tuesday night.

How scary good is this team going to be when they get Geno back and when him and Sid finally get going. Good lord.

Line pairings were not out on the Penguins website yet but they did have what they thought they might be when looking at the forwards:

Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Dupuis-Adams-Fedotenko
Bourque-Rupp-Godard

I LOVE that the second line is going to possibly be Cooke-Staal-Kennedy. Kennedy was a machine on Tuesday and him with the other two on the SS line are just a dangerous line. That line can do big things.

The Penguins are not good on the West coast but this is a pretty good team. Lets see what happens.

No word yet on if Sid or MAF will be in net, although Sid is listed on the first line.
