Steelers Game Day 9 - vs. New England Patriots

Another big game this week as the tough road stretch is finally over and the toughest stretch of the season is finally going to end when the Patriots come to Heinz Field on Sunday night. This is the Steelers third straight prime time game. Nothing like spreading out the prime time games huh NFL.

I hate the Patriots more than the next guy. Actually I really don't think there is anyone that lives in or around Pittsburgh that likes the Patriots. If they do they don't like being happy.

Jump it.

So here we are again. The New England Patriots. The only way that someone who is a Steelers fan to hate the New England Patriots more is if they were in the AFC North and had Ray Lewis on their team. I am not even kidding. Typically when you talk to a Pittsburgh Sports person and you ask for their top five most hated teams across all sports you will get the New England Patriots in that list about 99.9% of the time. The other .1% is probably no longer living.

Enough can’t be said about the self absorbed New England fans. Between the Celtics, Pats, Red Sox and sleeping with your own sisters they just think they are the best thing since sliced break. You know what you do have on your side Patriots fans? This:

Yea, Sarah f’in Palin. Congratulations. I am sure you have Fox News in your back pocket too since she works for them. You know what that makes the Patriots since they are basically tied into Fox News right? [The whole thing is funny, but watch from the 3:30 mark]

Yes, that is right; The New England Patrios are terrorists. Jesus. I hope you “fans” can sleep at night.

Outside of the fans making you want to gauge your eyes out watching them suck off Tom Brady or make you want to stick a pencil so far in your ear that you become deaf from hearing them tell you how amazing Bill Belichick is the fact that they just can’t get over the fact that their team outright cheated.

Yea I am sure it doesn’t help your team to know exactly what the other team is doing. I guess that is why NFL teams invite other coaches to come watch their practice and openly share their defensive signals. No, that makes sense.

You can, however, do this when you tape all the other teams signals so you don’t have to worry about anything:

Playing dodgeball. Bet Goodell doesn’t suspend anyone for this headshot. I guess since James Harrison isn’t within 50 miles he can’t call that.

Another reason to hate the shit out of the Patriots is the players on their team. Sure a lot of people don’t like Tom Brady, and I am one of them. But I can respect that he is a top quarterback in the NFL. I do not like him and his smug face and I do not like that he throws to schmucks like West Welker and Dion Branch to win football games, but I respect him. What I do not respect is d-bags like Rodney Harrison. He might be in the top five list of most hated sports figures on my list. He should defiantly be on your list. If there wasn’t a more blatant cheap shot artist on the field then I must not have seen him. Players are going to get hurt from getting hit, but he went out of his way to make sure that he did it the dirtiest way possible. What a pussy. Fitting that he is on NBC with toolbag Mike Florio. How do those two even have jobs?

Lets take a look at the Patriots a little bit to really see what the Steelers are up against when they take on the hated rivals.

Everyone knows that the Patriots have probably the best quarterback in the NFL. This is no one year wonder. Brady has been doing his thing for many of years. Not only has Brady been good overall, but he has been really good against the Steelers. 5-1 against the Black and Gold in his career and has pretty much had his way, even with subpar offensive weapons. Like I said, I do not like Tom Brady, but as a football fan you have to respect his game. Dude can play, but he is coming into Pittsburgh. All of that goes out of door now.

You want to know when you know you are starting to go downhill? When Justin Bieber is making fun of you. Bieber might be one of the biggest tools out there and when he bashes your look you know you are in trouble.

Outside of Wes Welker, who the hell are these guys? Aaron Hernandez and Brandon Tate? Are you f’in kidding me?

After some Wikipedia searching we find out that Hernandez is a tight end from Florida. Turns out that Hernandez is a huge pot head as he failed “multiple” drug tests while at UF. Hey, don’t tell me I am wrong. Wikipedia is the most trusted source in the world.

Any time I can use that YouTube it is a win.

Brandon Tate is behind do-everything Wes Welker on the field. Tate is another rookie. I mean I know these guys are getting the job done, but with no down field threat that makes Wes Welker even less of a problem for the Steelers. Without Moss Welker has been an average receiver on this team. Welker hasn’t had a game with over 70 yards all season and has four games with 40 yards or less. What is more revealing about Welker this season is that Welker has never averaged less than 10 yards per catch during a season. This year: 8.1. Not really good. The past three season Welker has caught no less than 110 passes. This year he is on pace for 88. Not the same player.

Dion Branch came back to the Patriots in the middle of this season after some playing time with Seattle. I would be worried, but it isn’t 2001 anymore.

The running backs are more of a no name than the receivers.

The guy that has really been the x-factor for the Patriots is out for the year, Kevin Faulk. Now, Faulk was mainly a third down back and a change of pace kinda guy, but holy hell all this guy did was make huge plays when the Patriots needed it. Any time he was on the field he was money for a screen pass or wrap around draw on third and short or medium. I bet he picked up the first down almost every single time. Dude was just money. Too bad he isn’t there. Yea right.

The Patriots have basically nobody else. BenJarvus Green-Ellis is the team’s leading rusher with almost 400 yards and some joke named Danny Woodhead has ran for like 230 yards. Woodhead is listed as 5-8 but I think that is a little generous.

That is an actual picture of Danny Woodhead. Hopefully Casey Hampton thinks he’s a treat and just eats him like a Flintstone vitamin. Not really worried about the running game because lets face it, who runs on the Steelers?

When you talk about the Patriots defense you might think to yourself that you should be scared of it. I mean just talking about the New England Patriots in 2000’s you figure that the defense is going to have a few no name guys, but they just get the job done.

That is not the case this year. Although the Patriots have a lot of no name defenders they are just God awful at playing football.

I mean really?

The Patriots are in the bottom half in all the major categories. The Patriots defense has also given up over 400 yards of total offense in four games and over 360 yards in all but one game. That is a bad defense. They are coming off of giving up 230 yards rushing and 400+ yards to a Cleveland Browns offense. Yes, a Cleveland Browns offense. Haha.

No idea where to even start. Jerod Mayo is their best defensive player, by far. He leads the NFL with 96 tackles. Pretty solid. Not going to be solid enough to stop the Steelers though.

Pat Chung is the Pats starting safety and he is second on the team in tackles and first on the team with two interceptions. I mean really? Is this serious?

Brandon Meriweather is also in the secondary for the Patriots. Easily the most hated Patriot. Dude thinks he is so awesome at football even when he doesn’t make plays. All he does is go for the big hits and celebrates after, even if the receiver catches the ball for a first down. Dude talks a lot of shit and I can’t wait for Mike Wallace to run right past this joke all night.

If you ask me the Patriots have been a really really good football team for a good while now. This season the football team is average at best. This is not a top tier football team and they aren’t as good as everyone is making them out to be.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not going to be an easy win for the Steelers, but it will be a win. I just don’t think the Patriots can stack up with the Steelers, especially at Heinz Field.

The defense is just going to have to come out and do what it does. Be dominant. I have been hearing a lot this week about how the Steelers give up too many passing yards and how they are too soft in the fourth quarter of games. If you really think that please read this article by Adam over at the Steelers Lounge. Great read and really breaks down everything I have said here, but better.

The point of the game is to win. To win you have to give up less points than your opponent. The Steelers give up the least amount of points per game in the league. What more do you want? The Steelers could give up 600 yards a game, but if they win and have the best defense in terms of points given up IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE then what can you bitch about? Nothing. Quit your bitching and just take in what this defense has done all season. That is being great.

For the offense it is simple. Keep it simple. Run the football, make the smart play in the passing game and use the play action. The two most important things in a football game are winning the turnover margin and third down conversions. If the Steelers take care of the football and are pretty respectable on third down I think they will be more than alright.

Rashard has been running the ball well all season so just keep it chucking. We know that the Steelers offensive line is beat up so lets just hope for the best, create a couple of holes and keep Ben clean and we should be alright.

Prediction: Steelers 27, Patriots 13.

Hit it
