Penguins Game Day 77 - vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning

7:30 PM, Mellon Arena, Pittsburgh, PA

The Penguins are coming down the stretch run of their season and it continues with the Tampa Bay Lighting as they visit the Igloo for the final time.

This should be a pretty good game and there is going to be some great talent on the ice, and not just for the Penguins. Steven Stamkos plays for the Lightning and if you haven't been noticing him on the ice then you haven't been watching hockey. What a player.

Gonch and Geno will miss tonight for like the 100th straight game. This is what the Penguins lineup will most likely look like:

Forwards
Ponikarovsky-Crosby-Dupuis
Kunitz-Staal-Guerin
Cooke-Kennedy-Fedotenko
Rupp-Talbot-Adams

Defense
McKee-Eaton
Orpik-Letang

The Penguins and Lightning will meet for the fourth and final time this season and the last time the Lightning will visit the Mellon.

The two teams played about two weeks ago and the Penguins rallied from a 1-0 second period deficit for the 2-1 win:

The Lightning took game two of the series 3-1 on January 2:

October 17, the Penguins won 4-1:

Penguins Game Day 76 - vs Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs

5:00 PM, Mellon Arena, Pittsburgh, PA

The Penguins came off an impressive 4-1 win over the Flyers, the Penguins will return to action against the Toronto Maple Leafs. This will be the final time that the Leafs will visit Mellon Arena.

While reading the game recap last night I found this the most entertaining. From Empty Netters Seth gives us the greatest first line in his final thoughts: "When things seem bleakest, a good old fashioned visit from the Flyers and their shoddy goaltending always seems to cure the Penguins." That is about as close to the truth as you can get. Awesome.

Like we said this will be the final time the Penguins play the Leafs at the Igloo and it will also be the final time they play in the 2009-10 season as the the Leafs will not make the playoffs this year and the Penguins have already cliched a spot. Sadly the Penguins are in and the Leafs can't play them in the "10th game" that you have during your high school football season that everyone things is a complete and utter joke but your coach wants to do it because it thinks it will help.

Here is how the season series has gone so far for the Penguins and Leafs:

Sarge scored twice to break a 1-1 tie in the Penguins 3-1 win over the Leafs:

The Leafs came back and took the second game of the series on December 27 when they bested the Penguins 4-3:

The Penguins recorded two PP goals in a 5-2 win at the Air Canada Centre on October 10:

Penguins Game Day 74 - @ Washington Capitals

Washington Capitals

7:00 PM, Verizon Center, Washington, D.C.

Big game after big game after big game this week for the Penguins. This is the second of a three game series against rivals as the Penguins travel to DC to take on the Capitals in the glorified circus atmosphere they call the Verizon Center.

The Penguins looked pretty flat against the Wings and if they come out and play like that tonight they will no fair very well against the top team in the East.

Here are the lines for the Penguins from their website:

Forwards

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis

Geno was not out for the morning skate so it looks as if he will be a scratch again tonight. Damn.

This will be the third meeting between the Pens and the Caps this season with the Capitals winning both of the previous contests.

The Caps battled back from a big deficit and won 5-4 in OT on February 21

The Penguins dropped the first game of the series, at the Igloo, 6-3 on January 21:

Crosby Sucks? Pens Lose

The Penguins went into Joe Louis Arena and dropped their contest to the Wings 3-1. The Penguins never really seemed to have much control over the game and we really got to see what the Wings team was like at full strength.

The Wings can be a scary team and they dominated the Penguins for stretches of the game tonight and it was really tough to watch as Detroit pushed the issue and were getting to the net. Thomas Holmstrom's fat ass was in MAF's grill all night and there wasn't much anyone cold do about it. Bing tried to push him out but he was no match and it led directly to Zetterberg's first of two goals on the night.

The Penguins scored a goal to cut the lead to 2-1 on a Pascal Dupuis goal late in the second period but the Penguins couldn't get much going after that. Chris Kunitz played a nice game and worked his balls off to set up the Dupuis goal, but that was probably the closest the Penguins got until Alexei Ponikarovsky rang the goal pipe from the slot with about three minutes left to go in the game.

Not to say the Penguins didn't give the effort but it just wasn't their night. Things weren't flowing and the defense wasn't up to snuff against a pretty talented team, which has sort of been the way things have gone with the Penguins this whole season. They can stack up with the best of the best but this season it seems to be harder and harder to hold on to leads and really put the foot on the throat of opponents. Hopefully this will change.

Marc Andre played a pretty good game tonight and was probably the best player on the ice for the Penguins. He made big saves when the Penguins were only down one goal but gave up a bad goal on Zetterberg's second. It looked as if MAF got fooled when he let go of the wrist shot right inside the blue line and just got beat on the blocker side and gave the Wings a big two goal lead.

The Wings are going to be a tough team to match up against in the playoffs for whoever gets them. Like I said, the Penguins came out with a less than stellar performance but the Wings are a solid team.

The Wings fans were uncharacteristically bad tonight. Not bad in terms of cheering for their team, but bad in terms of booing Sidney Crosby every single time he touched the puck. I mean the Penguins have played in JLA more than a few times in the past few years, most with the Stanley Cup on the line, and they never gave it to Sid in that way. They were giving the "Crosby Sucks" chant that was thought to be trademarked by the Philadelphia Flyers, something they never have done before. I mean as much as Crosby does suck for being the leagues leading goal scorer I was kinda baffled to hear it.

Crosby was giving up some emotions late in the game. So much for not having any emotions. Bing went right after Zetterberg at the end of the game with a few shots and then Zetterberg threw a punch at Bing and he went right back after him but Wings rookie keeper Jimmy Howard went after Bing and they had words after the game. If the Wings and Pens make it to the finals this year again that will be interesting to watch.

Am I worried about the Penguins? No. They will be fine so don't go bash me and say that I am just some bandwagon guy who is giving up. This is a Stanley Cup contending team that is ready to clinch up a playoff berth and could have the two seed coming out of the east. The Penguins do need to tighten things to finish up the season and go into the playoffs strong. They got it.

Overall it was a tough night and it will be even tougher the next week as the Penguins match up with the Capitals and Flyers. Nobody needs to tell any of us what these points mean. Lets get it on.

Penguins Game Day 73 - @ Detroit Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings

7:00 PM, Joe Lous Arena, Detroit, MI

The Penguins return to the Joe for the first time since game seven of last year's cup finals. Remember how that went?

Oh, that's right.

Here are the lines for the Penguins from their website:

Forwards
Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Ponikarovsky-Talbot-Fedotenko
Cooke-Staal-Guerin
Rupp-Adams-Kennedy

Defense
Gonchar-Eaton
Orpik-Letang

If you notice Geno is not going to be in the lineup after tweaking his ankle against the Hurricanes. He will be ok. Get healthy Geno, you the man.

This will be the first of two meetings between these teams this year. Last season the Penguins went 5-4 including regular season/post season.
EDIT: I am an idiot. This is the second time the teams will meet. The only other time was January 31st at the Mellon Arena:

The Wings are not as strong as they were last year but they are starting to get healthy, and with Franzen, Zetterburg, Datsyuk you can never take them likely and they can beat you 7-1 any night of the week.

I do not like the Wings but I do have a lot respect for them.

Here are the team comparisons:

This is the start of like rivalry week for the Penguins. They play the Wings tonight, the Caps on Wednesday and the Flyers on Saturday. What a week if you are a Penguins fan.

The Penguins need every point they can get. The race is going to be very very tight and this week might determine if they win the Atlantic and get the two seed or slide down to get the four or five seed. It starts now.

Suck it Detroit.

Do it.

Scouring the Web

Well I know things have not been on the up and up here on the blog for the past month or so and you know what, that is the way it goes. I have been busy with trips and stuff and I will be out of town again next week so I thought I would come on and give you a little of this and that from around the web.

First, and foremost, Joe Mauer signed an eight year, $187 million contract today. Holy shit. That comes out to about $23 mil. a year for the next eight years. It keeps one of the best players in baseball in Minnesota for probably the rest of his career. The question is now if that deal is a good move for the Twins. Mauer is 27 years old and he is a catcher. I am sure his knees are not 21 years old so to think he is going to catch and hit at this level into his 35th birthday is a little hard to imagine. Sure he can be a DH but can he be $23 mil. productive? I doubt it. I just think it is too many years, but what do I know. I think a four, maybe five, years would have been great, eight is too many.

The Pitt Panthers were knocked out in the second round of the NCAA Tournament today by Xavier despite a great second half comeback. Lets not get it twisted, this was a good game by the Panthers today. They started off the game with a tough shooting stretch but really played some good basketball, they just rank into a red hot Xavier team.

If feel somehow let down by this Pitt men's basketball team then you need to come back to reality. This Pitt team exceeded any expectations from pretty much everyone in college basketball. The Panthers lost four starters and 67% of their offense this year and were picked to finished 9th in the Big East. What did they do? Finished 2nd in the Big East and wrapped up a three seed in the NCAA tournament for the youngest Big East team. This Pitt team didn't disappoint anyone. This Pitt team proved that Jamie Dixon is one of the best, if not the best, college basketball coach in the game. This shows that his system works and he can motivate his kids no matter what the press or fans are saying. This guy showed his coaching ability and this basketball team gave 110% every single game. I can't really express how impressed I was with the Panthers this year and I would rate their season as great.

If you somehow think this Pitt team is disappointing then don't ever watch college basketball ever again.

Pittsburgh Steelers management is going to take a wait and see approach to the Big Ben situation. This should be interesting. I guess I can see where they come from because Ben has yet to be proved of doing anything wrong in the two times he has been accused of raping these girls. My gut says he didn't do either, but it is becoming a pattern and the Comish isn't going to be so forgiving if this would happen again. Get your shit together Ben.
http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=8158735246874608943It turns out that

The Penguins lost in overtime to the Carolina Hurricanes yesterday. Now that might not seem too bad because the Penguins go the point and getting points is the name of the game, but how they lost really sucks. The Hurricanes beat the Guins with .9 seconds left in overtime. Vomit.

It turns out that the Steelers will NOT be drafting a QB. Shocker

The Pirates are getting ready to start the season. I will try and have a preview up ASAP. No promises here, I am busy nowadays.

Finally there seems to be a fanpage that was created on Facebook for "Not being raped by Ben Roethlisberger" Real sweet. I mean that just shows a ton of class. Here is the page. Report it. As much as I like to poke fun I would never do something of this bad of taste. Get a life.

Touring Lambeau Field

I was on a trip for work this past week which took me to Marquette, MI and along the way I got to stay two nights in Green Bay. I was able to hook up with a tour of Lambeau Field on my last night there and it was awesome.

As a Pittsburgh fan I can appreciate the history and the ins and outs of a great football franchise like the Green Bay Packers. This was an unbelievable tour and Lambeau Field is a great facility.

Here are the pictures that I was able to take with some captions underneath them (as if you couldn't figure out what they were.)

This loooks outside the Don Hutson Center which is where the Packers practice facility is. This is located right beside the field and is where the kids ride the players to on their bikes for training camp. The grass fields they have are out of control. I was told that there are 3,000 tickets that are sold for practice and there are actually scalpers who sell these tickets outside.
This is an outside shot of Lambeau Field from across the street. It is pretty sweet to see as you are driving by.

The Packers actually have a basketball court in the stadium. Got some good stories about how players and famous people would come in and play before they would do shows. It is a smaller court but for some 4-on-4 it is pretty decent.

This is right inside where they keep the three Super Bowl trophies. It was pretty awesome to see the jerseys of all those players.

Huh, three, I have seen six at one time. Can't really remember where that is though...

There is Ryan Grant's locker.

Aaron Rodgers locker.

The Packers weight room facility. What an amazingly big place. Most places have a max of 100 point dumbells, well in there they have 140 pound dumbells. Pretty big place and they have anything you need workout wise.

Inside the weight room with my flash going off.

Here is the Green Bay logo inside the locker room. The logo takes up like the whole carpet space so that is pretty cool.

All-in-all it was an amazing facility with a lot to offer. I highly recomend that if you have a chance to take a tour of it you do.

Steelers are still better.

Penguins Game Day 71 - @ Boston Bruins

Boston Bruins

7:00 PM, TD Garden, Boston, Mass

This will be the "revenge" game from the hit Matt Cooke put on Marc Savard earlier this month.

Was it cheap? Yea, probably. Should he have been suspended? Yea, probably. Do you think I care about this anymore? No, not one bit. It is over. Who cares. That is Savard's like eighth concussion (no lie) while in the NHL. I mean it wasn't like this was his first and it took a lot to give him one. A fly landing on the dude's head gives him a concussion anymore.

I am not saying what Matt Cooke did was right, because it wasn't, but lets not treat this like he took a knife and tried to decapitate him.

If the Bruins want to try to get even I say that is good. The Penguins will focus on winning the game and the Bruins can focus on trying to get back at the Penguins. I mean the Bruins are trying to get into the playoffs and they want to worry about trying to make Sidney Crosby bleed.

Here are the lines for tonight per the Penguins web site:

Forwards

Ponikarovsky-Crosby-Dupuis
Kunitz-Staal-Guerin
Cooke-Kennedy-Fedotenko
Rupp-Talbot-Adams

Defense

Gonchar-Eaton
Orpik-Letang

Geno is going to be out again after getting hit with a shot a few days ago. Not a big deal. Get some rest Geno, you will be needed for the playoffs.

Tim Thomas isn't going to be in net for the Bruins. Interesting since he was lights out against the Penguins the last time these two teams played.

This will be the fourth and final game between these two teams this season.

The Penguins got a huge win on March 7 in a 2-1 win:

The Penguins pulled away a 6-5 overtime win at the Mellon on November 14:

November 10 the Penguins got shut out by Timmy:

Penguins Game Day 70 - @ New Jersey Devils

New Jersey Devils

7:00 PM,Prudential Center, Newark, NJ

Wow, doesn't it seem like the Penguins were just at the Rock? Oh that is right, because they were.

Geno Malkin is going to be out of the lineup tonight after getting hit by a Kris Letang shot against Tampa Bay. The good news is that Geno isn't going to be out for very long. The tests were all negative. That is good. Some people want to make the off comment remark that Geno has been "out" all season since he has been "struggling". I guess top 20 in points is struggling. Jokes.

This is probably the biggest game of the season to date. The Devils have two games in hand on the Penguins and are four points back. They also have one less win as the Penguins. You do the math.

This is a four point game possibly. The Penguins win and they are six points up and still only playing two more games. Huge.

Flower is back in net. He is riding a six game point streak where he is 3-0-3 during that span.

The Penguins have to play against Marty and US hero Zach Parise. I love Parise as a player and he can take games over just like Marty can. Earlier this season I was at the game where Marty broke the shutout record.

The Penguins have really struggled against the Devils this seasons going without a win in four contests. Marty has shut out the Penguins twice so far.

Christmas in March

Wow, was today awesome or what. As a Pittsburgh Steelers fan I don't think any of us really have experienced what went on today in the Steel City. The Steelers signed four different players today. Now, I am not just talking about practice squad players and special teams guys, I am talking about people that are expected to produce both as starters and as immediate backups.

The Steelers started the day by signing WR Arnaz Battle and safety Will Allen. Battle is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and he has played his last seven years for the San Fransisco 49ers.

Battle has 178 career catches for 2150 yards and 11 touchdowns. Probably more of a special teams guy than someone who is going to go out and catch 10 balls a game. Good depth signing.

Will Allen is coming to the Steelers from the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Now, I know what most of you were thinking. Ryan Clark was gone. I mean all over the papers they were talking about how he went to Miami and said he wanted to play somewhere that they wanted him and he was hoping to get a contract done before he even left Miami. You had to be thinking that it sucks because Allen is new and was going to be a downgrade from Ryan Clark, especially when he and Troy are both healthy.

Oh man then what happened? I get on Twitter for the first time all day around 6:00 PM and what do I see? The Steelers sign Antwaan Randle El.

Oh shit. El was with the Steelers for four years before he bolted to go play with Dan Snyder at Washington. What a mistake. El was the best return man we have had when he was with the Steelers, but found little to no success with the Redskins. Last season he had 50 grabs for 530 yards and didn't find the endzone one time. In his four seasons with Washington he caught 186 balls for 2,202 yards and eight touchdowns. He will be get balls from Ben instead of Jason Campbell, big difference.

I am not going to say I expect El to catch 95 balls and rack up 1500 yards but it will be nice to have a little depth and with him and Battle they will most assuredly push Limas Sweed out of the picture. Can't say I am surprised. I mean Sweed was put on the non-injury IR at the end of the season so something must have happened that we all don't know about. Whatev.

So the day was winding down and what happens? BAM. The Steelers sign Ryan Clark.
Holy Shit what a day. Clark signs a four-year deal worth $17 million. I have no idea what happened but from what I can remember reading on Twitter today (sorry I don't remember who tweeted it) but Clark told his agent to get him home and get a deal done with Pittsburgh. Oh man that is awesome.

Before everyone gets in a tizzy about having Clark on the books for four more years I will just tell you one thing, relax. This is a front heavy contract with Clark getting $5 mil of that in the first year. From what I understand the latter years of the deal will be VERY cap friendly so even if Ryan isn't here for years three and four it isn't that big of a deal. Oh. Yea.

What a job by the Steelers. Clark was a priority and it got done. They got depth in the secondary with the signing of Will Allen and depth in our receiver core with El and Battle. Allen wasn't going to be starter material but he is going to be a nice option in case something happens to Clark. I mean lets not kid ourselves we don't want Ty Carter to be back there as much as he was last year.

Great job by the Steelers front office.

Get your shit together Ben.

Must See YouTube

This has nothing to do with the Steelers, Penguins or Pirates, but it might be the best YouTube video ever. If you don't like this then you are not human.

Four Straight, Pens Win

The Penguins won for the fourth straight time and downed the Boston Bruins 2-1 at the Mellon Arena Sunday afternoon. Marc Andre Fleury grabbed his 31st victory of the season and his second in as many days.

Lets not get it twisted, Boston isn't really the Washington Capitals when it comes to goals so going in you knew that three goals was going to probably be enough for victory. That would have been a good assumption as it only took two.

The first period was rather pedestrian as both teams went into the break tied at zero. The Bruins only managed up three shots in the first, but not from a lack of attempts.

You would have thought someone went to the Bruins locker room and told them that whoever hits the glass behind the goaltender the most times will win. In that case Boston blew the Penguins out of the water in the first. Tim Thomas kept the Bruins in the game in the first and was their best player the entire game.

Both teams came out as world beaters. Great up and down hockey and a few goals were actually scored too! The Bruins were the first to get on the board on perplexing goal. MAF seems to have the puck covered but Blake Wheeler is able to stab it in. Kinda seemed like the whistle should have been blown, but whatev.

The Penguins then got their make up call. Almost the same exact thing happened. Crosby got the puck to Dupuis who had his initial shot blocked but he was able to punch it in from Timmy's pad into the back of the net.

Thomas actually threw his blocker off to protest the goal, or he wanted a cheeseburger, either way he didn't get what he wanted.

Speaking on Dupuis how good has this guy been? I mean a ton of people write this guy off if you don't hear his name in a good way for two games you want him cut. This is the kind of guy every team needs. A grinder that does it all. He is on the PK, he flanks Sid's wing, he plays on the fourth line, what more do you want? Dupers would probably be the guy out when Billy G gets back but now I don't know how you take this guy out of the lineup. He was everywhere today, and the other games since the break.

After the second ended with a 1-1 tie I really thought the game was going to go into overtime. I mean getting a point today wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world on the second day of back-to-backs. Enter Geno Malkin.

The new guy, Poni, dishes Geno a pass and then darts to the net, taking a defenseman and screening Timmy as Geno gets a shot. Glove side. Cash. Two points in two games for Poni. He is doing exactly what we thought he was going to do. Cause trouble in front of the net and do the dirty work. He is a big man and he seems to know what to do.

The Penguins shut the door the rest of the game and MAF was rock solid to finish.

Matt Cooke overshadowed the win with a head shot to Marc Savard. Savard was on the ice for about 10 min until he was carted off and taken to the hospital with a concussion. I will have a post tonight or tomorrow about what I think on the hit.

MAF wasn't flashy, but when is he ever? He does what he does. Makes big saves when he needs to and just gets the Penguins the wins. He is the man.

Lots of games left. Magic number is like 20 points, or something.
