Pirates Acquire Michael McKenry

Tonight Dejan Kovacevic broke news that the Pirates have reached a deal with the Boston Red Sox for AAA catcher Michael McKenry. The Pirates give up a player to be named later and cash. To make room for McKenry on the 40 man roster Wyatt Toregas has been DFA'd.

McKenry was acquired by the Red Sox this past season from the Colorado Rockies and was in AAA Pawtucket where he had a triple slash line of .280/.370/.430 in 93 at bats.

Here is McKenry's statistics during his minor league career:

He has eight career major league at bats, all with Colorado in the 2010 season and has yet to pick up his first major league hit.

He is regarded has being a strong defensive catcher so that will help the Piates out a lot and his career .811 OPS in the minors is going to be a nice addition to the offense. It was a move the Pirates needed to make since Chris Snyder and Ryan Doumit are both on the DL and neither is ready to return for at least another month at best.

All in all this is a nice move for the Pirates since they are only giving up cash/PTBNL. I wasn't really high on swinging a deal for a catcher that we might only need for a couple of months in a season where we are not contenders but it is great that we were able to find a strong (hopefully) defensive catcher that can maybe hold his own at the plate. Should be interesting to see when he gets into the lineup and when he can play. You have to assume it will be soon since Toregas was already DFA'd.
