LaMarr Woodley: AFC Defensive Player of the Month
So much for the slow start and not living up to a contract huh? Today we found out that Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for the month of October.
Woodley was an absolute monster in games against Houston, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Arizona and New England when he registered 7.5 sacks and 25 tackles (17 solo). Woodley most likely would have added to that sack total had he not missed most of the second half in the game against New England.
Woodley has at least 1.5 sacks in each of his last four games which is a new Steelers record and could add to that. Woodley also had an interception in the Steelers win against Tennessee on October 9.
Honestly this has been a killer month for Woodley. He didn't play that great in the first two games but it seemed like when people started questioning his play he turned it on. I know people are really going to talk about the sacks but Woodley has been very solid against the run. After getting beat on a few cutbacks he really tighted up and has been a beast at tackling potential ball carries and not giving up huge chunks of yards.
So far this season Woodley has 36 tackles (26 solo) and nine sacks which is good for third in the league and tops in the AFC.
Woodley is the first Player of the Month for the Steelers this year and he joins Ben Roethlisberger who won the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award after week eight against the Patriots and week four against the Tennesse Titans and also joins Rashard Mendenhall who won the award after a week six win against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
