Penguins Game 28 Recap - Bruins 3, Penguins 1

Well tonight was what they like to refer to as a good old fashion ass whoppin. The Bruins came in riding a 13-0-1 streak and we saw why as they dominated the Penguins for the better part of the game and by the time the Penguins woke up it was too late and they were down three goals, eventually falling 3-1.

It just wasn’t good. In the first period the Penguins were held to only six shots and in the second the Bruins got a pair of goals and that was more than enough for Tim Thomas. The Penguins ended up getting 46 shots on net but honestly Thomas was on another planet and there was little chance that the Penguins were going to get anything going.

I guess it also doesn’t help that the Penguins went 0-for-5 on the power play which included two 5-on-3 power plays which lasted for a combined total of three minutes. You are not going to win very many games when you can’t cash in when you are two men up. I must admit that the Bruins PK was extremely good and I don’t think they got enough credit from the fans who were want more willing to blame the Penguins power play rather than give some credit to the Bruins. This isn’t to say that the Penguins power play didn’t struggle, because it did. In a major way. But I think that Thomas and the Bruins PK had something to do with the struggle of the Penguins power play.

It was a pretty chippy game and very physical the whole way around. There were 10 total power plays in the game and there were some huge hits on both sides of the ice so it was a pretty entertaining game to watch in that aspect. There were some things that you never like to see which is one of the most blatant slew foots by Brad Marchand on Matt Niskanen and later on Evgeni Malkin was basically head butted by a Bruins player who was wearing a full facemask.

The Penguins finally got on the board halfway through the third when Matt Cooke got a layup from a nice pass from Joe Vatale but it was too little too late. That made the score 3-1 and while the Penguins really pressed the issue the final 10 minutes it was just too far out of reach, especially with how Thomas was playing. The final 10 minutes of the game was hwo I thought the Penguins might play the whole game but alas it was not. It’s only one game out of 81, not the end of the world.

The Bruins earned this win big time. They are a great team right now and basically unbeatable. Should be fun to see them later in the year and it will be fun to see them continue this run they are on. By no means am I a Bruins fan but as a hockey fan you have to respect the hell out of what they are doing.

Flyers on Thursday.
