After the Penguins win last night in New York it would have been very easy for them to come out and lay and egg against a bad team tonight. For two periods that is exactly the way the game played out and every time the Penguins got within a goal the Habs were there to push another goal past MAF.
Things just felt like they weren't going to fall but then the third period came around with the Penguins down 4-2 and Dustin Jeffrey and Evgeni Malkin tied it up to force overtime and Geno scored the only goal in the shootout to bring the Penguins winning streak to five games as they head into another game with Washington on Sunday.
Malkin was outstanding. The Habs put their top defensive pair on him and for the most part they did their job. Malkin only had one shot before he buried the tying goal with less than three minutes in the game. Any time you needed a big play you look toward Malkin and he has been coming through every single time. Nobody is better in the NHL than him right now.
Jeffrey has had problems with a torn ACL last season and is just coming back from injuries this year and it was only a matter of time before he broke out. He is kind of that unsung guy that is a good all around player and tonight he came through with two beautiful goals and added an assist. I talked about the secondary scoring a few games ago and it has come up huge the past two games. Jeffrey is just another example of how good this team can be if the secondary guys are on. It's a great thing to watch.
Kris Letang logged almost 29 minutes of action and was great. His first goal was a thing of beauty and it really looks like he hasn't missed a beat. What an unreal player.
Marc Andre Fleury started this game which if you read the pregame knew that I thought this wasn't the best idea. You almost have to think that MAF isn't going to play against both the Caps on Sunday and Blues on Tuesday so it should be interesting to see how HCDB handles it. As I said on twitter I trust his judgement but MAF is logging a ton of games so far and you have to wonder how they feel about their backup goaltending situation.
Whatever. PK Subban sucks. I don't like the Habs. Good for them.
Bring on the Caps.
