Pirates Game 42 Recap - Pirates 5, Mets 4

Just has been the case most of the year the Pirates respond to a loss with a win and for the 10th time this year they picked up a win after trailing. What was no so common about tonight was that the Pirates were able to overcome a four run deficit after two innings and capitalize on some pretty poor Mets play and take the first game of the series.

The Mets were charged with three errors the worst of which was a three base error when center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis and left fielder Mike Baxter nearly collided and Nieuwenhuis had the ball hit off his glove (which he still should have caught) and it went all the way to the wall. With one out Clint Barmes hit a shallow fly ball to right field which barely scored Neil Walker.

It really wasn't all that play. This was one of the few times that the hitters actually picked up the starting pitching after Erik Bedard only lasted five innings and was beat up for four runs in the second inning. After that happened people were actually saying they were turning their TV off and the game was over. I guess they forgot this was a nine inning game.

The Pirates got a pair back in the fourth inning with back-to-back-to-back doubles by Josh Harrison, Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez with no outs. Things looked really good but as good as that made you feel the very next hitter was Walker and he tried to bunt but popped it up for the first out. I have no idea why Walker thinking a bunt was a good idea there. After the game Clint Hurdle said that the bunt was something that Walker did on his own but he, in not so many words, approved of it. This is what is wrong with all the bunting that takes place. It is out of control and I am not really sure if it will ever change under Hurdle.

Anyways the Pirates used some great innings from the pen to hold the fort until the player named the fort came through. With the Pirates down 4-2 and a runner on first he came up with a big hit and took a Johan Santana deep to left centerfield. I am not a big McKenry fan but he seems to get those big hits from time to time and it was really nice to have this game have one of those big hits. This was after I said in pregame that I thought Rod Barajas should have been playing. What do I know?

McCutchen is still really good. 2-for-4 on the night. No idea why anyone is pitching to this guy.

Back at it tomorrow.
