The Penguins went down 3-1 to the Devils for the second straight day. Things are going to be nuts for me work wise the next couple of weeks so there might be some shorter recaps but I will do what I can. Here are my quick thoughts: -The Penguins actually played a really good first period. After the first period the Penguins were down 1-0 but I think they outplayed the Devils for much, if not all, of the period. The Devils didn't even have a shot for the first nine minutes of the period. -The second period was dominated by the Devils. They got 13 shots on goal and held the Penguins to five. They scored a pair of goals and virtually put the game away. -Penguins had a chance to get back in it with a goal in the first minute of the third period but couldn't get the momentum. They had a few decent chances but Johan Hedberg was good. He earned the win. -The game was much more physical than the game in New Jersey. There were only six total penalties and two of them were in a fight that took place right off the opening faceoff. The Penguins actually got away with a few borderline plays and you have to wonder if the officials had Saturday's game in the back of their minds even though it wasn't the same crew. -Vokoun was decent but not great. He didn't see a ton of shots and not all the goals were his fault but he wasn't as good as he has been for much of this season. With the offense struggling he was going to need to be at his tip top best to win this game and he wasn't. That isn't taking anything away from him, you give up three goals with the Penguins offense and you should have a much better chance to win. Just wasn't in the cards. -The first line looked really good. Sidney Crosby was getting chances and so was Chris Kunitz. Pascal Dupuis was probably the weakest member of that line and he missed a few good chances for whatever reason.
-The Penguins did another outstanding job winning faceoffs. They won 34-of-55 draws. Very nice.
-A split would have been a decent weekend for the Penguins but they lost a pair of games to a division opponent. That is four points for the Devils and they now have a game in hand and three points up on the Penguins. We are still really early in the season so this is far from over. As quickly as the Penguins put together five wins they were down two straight now to a good Devils team. The same thing can happen again.
-Back on the ice on Wednesday.
