Penguins Game 37 Recap - Sabres 4, Penguins 1
-Well, this is probably what everyone should have seen coming at some point. The Penguins came out and looked pretty bad and after pitching three straight shutouts a team was due to score a goal or two on them and that is what happened tonight. Unfortunately for the Penguins tonight they weren't able to score goals and thus was the reason the 15 game losing streak is over. Now the Penguins have only won 15 of their last 16 games. What a horrible place to be.
-It was sloppy early. Nothing should have given you the idea that this wasn't the night then when Matt Niskanen gave a drop pass to Kevin Porter and he beat Tomas Vokoun. The problem in this whole scenario is that the Penguins were on the power play and Porter played for the Sabres. Other than that it was a great play. Just a really bizarre play by Niskanen to make.
-The Penguins actually got the goal back a few minutes later when Jarome Iginla scored his first goal as a Penguin on the power play. It was happy times.
-The worst time to give up a goal is right before the period ends and Steve Ott found the back of the net with 1:50 remaining in the period. It was a really nice shot and really just a deflating goal to give up right before the break.
-Buffalo really put the game away early in the second period when they scored a pair of goals just 1:17 apart and Vokoun looked rally bad on both of them.
-Vokoun wasn't good tonight at all. Just never looked really comfortable all game. He had been fairly good all year so this was just a blip on the radar but I am sure he wasn't happy getting yanked after just 23 minutes and giving up four goals on 13 shots.
-Good to see Marc-Andre Fleury back in action. Well, good in that he was healthy and looked healthy in playing, not good that Vokoun had to get yanked to see that. I think you know what I mean. He seemed really locked in and looked as sharp as he did before he was knocked out of his last contest with a neck injury. That was a huge boost and he was probably the best Penguins player on the ice tonight.
-As bad as Ryan Miller has been against the Penguins he was really good tonight. He made a couple of really tough saves early and once the Sabres got the lead he really didn't give the Penguins a really good chance to get back into it. Credit where it is due.
-The Penguins PK was really good tonight. Killed all five Buffalo power play opportunities. -All-in-all just a bad game for the Penguins. They looked sluggish and just couldn't find a groove. I guess when you are missing Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, and Paul Martin you are going to have games like this and to be honest I am surprised the streak didn't break earlier than this. 15 straight games without a loss is just incredible. As I talked about in the preview the Penguins are in a really good spot in terms of playoffs and as far as the division goes so this isn't that bid of a deal. If it turns into a three or four game losing streak then it is a problem but right now it is just one loss.
