The Last Penguins Game:
March 11, 2013 - Pittsburgh 6, Tampa Bay 3 [Recap]
The Penguins come to Florida and they are taking on a couple of non playoff teams who are really just playing their seasons out. On Thursday night they were able to dispatch of the Lightning fairly easy with a strong third period and they will look to do that exact same thing to a Florida team that isn't as talented as Tampa Bay but has already taken down the Penguins earlier this year. Not saying that the Panthers should always lose to the Penguins but with the talent disparity the Penguins should handle this team.
The game against the Lightning was pretty close for two periods and then things really opened up. Evgeni Malkin played a really nice game and the added talent that Kris Letang brought really can't be put into words. The power play was on top of their game and despite some really poor penalty killing it was business as usual. I would like to see the penalty kill get a little better and I think they can do so as I am sure this was the topic of conversation in the locker room.
The key to this was is to not let the Panthers hang around. The Penguins did a nice job against Tampa Bay of getting out to a quick 2-0 lead but they let them linger around and if it weren't for a dominating third period they woud have been in some real trouble. I know it is kind of ridiculous to say because you can't take a period away and play the 'what if' game but the Penguins still need to stack wins with big games against Montreal and Boston right around the corner. It would be really easy to look past a bad Florida team and get beat. I hope it doesn't come to that.
Marc-Andre Fleury is back in net for the Pens. Interesting that Dan Bylsma went with Vokoun against Tampa Bay and not against his former team but I get the logic. There is a long layoff between the game tomorrow and the game against Montreal on Wednesday and I don't think I would want MAF on an almost full week break between games. Thought Disco might go with Vokoun against Florida and if the Penguins played Sunday or Monday I think he would have but this was the right call in the goaltending situation.
I forgot to mention this in the game recap against the Lightning but Tanner Glass scored his first goal in that game. It was his first point as a Penguin. I know Glass gets a ton of crap but he has played pretty well recently and I would not be shocked to see him in the lineup when eveeryone is healthy.
