-Phil Irwin was optioned to AAA and with that Alex Presley rejoined the Pirates. Presley really doesn't give you a whole ton but he does run the bases well and he can played decent defense so I assume Clint Hurdle will use him in a ridiculous double switch in the sixth inning.

-The Cardinals are coming in after playing some really good baseball. Before falling to the Brewers 4-3 on Sunday the Cardinals had won six of their last seven games and had three straight consecutive shutouts and would have been a fourth if not for the Brewers scoring in the eighth inning of the eventual loss.

-Lance Lynn is on the bump for the Cards and in his last start he earned a win over the Reds when he went six innings and struck out ten while giving up a lone run and four hits.

-Last season Lynn made three starts against the Pirates holding hitters to a .222 average and striking out 24 Pirates in 24.1 innings.

-James McDonald didn't have a great last start but outside of the first inning he was decent. Last season in two starts against the Cardinals McDonald allowed only four hits in 13 innings and held Cards hitters to a .100 average.
