Pirates Game 2 Recap - Pirates 3, Cubs 0

-Man, how good did it seem about a billion Raise It tweets when Jason Grilli got the final out of the game? You just can't get stuff like that anywhere else. Well, maybe you could but it probably wouldn't be as good. Anyways, good win for the Pirates backed by a really strong pitching performance from Wandy Rodriguez and some clutch hits. The Pirates looked pretty brutal in the loss on Monday but they handled Edwin Jackson pretty well after the first time through the order and got to the Cubs pen.

-Rodriguez I don't think really gets his just due for how good he has been through his career. In 6.2 innings of work tonight he gave up only two hits and struck out six Cubs hitters. Granted, the Cubs offense is pretty brutal but he was in control pretty much all night long. He did get into a little bit of trouble in the seventh inning when Clint Hurdle seemed to refuse to want to take him out but he was able to get Brent Lillibridge to look at a hanging curveball on a 3-2 count. This is exactly what I talked about in the season preview. Rodriguez isn't going to wow you with great stuff but the dude knows how to pitch and he is going to pretty much always give you a chance to win. He did that, and more, tonight. The Pirates wasted a pretty good performance from A.J. Burnett on Monday and they didn't give one up tonight. Really great to see.

-Something that is very evident from just watching the first couple of Pirates games is that Russell Martin is a massive improvement defensively from what the Pirates have had the last couple of years. I don't really think people notice the subtle nuances from a catcher on the defensive end until it is so bad that you need to notice it. It is something that you take for granted. Martin's framing is as advertised and he bought Rodriguez a few calls late when he really needed them and it was huge. On Monday the way he handled the rundown on a runner trying to take the extra base was great. Last season the Pirates were brutally bad defensively but that is different this year. I know it has only been two games but from what we heard coming in and seen so far I wouldn't think it would go drastically bad.

-The Pirates offense really wasn't in the groove but they got it done. Only six hits overall but two of those hits plated runs. That is being efficient. Obviously it is not ideal to only have six hits in a game when when you do have those hits you need to make them count.

-The pen did another nice job. Tony Watson came on after Rodriguez went out and immediately went 3-0 on the hitter with the bases loaded but was able to get the strikeout with his next three pitches. He then worked the next inning before turning the ball over to Jason Grilli to record the final three outs as he struck out two more Cubs hitters.

-Other than that it was really a run of the mill game. The Cubs are pretty bad and both teams still seem to be trying to figure out what is going on offensively. I wouldn't assume things will get better tomorrow but I guess we shall see. Eight total hits today and three total runs. Rodriguez was much better than Jackson and that was really the story of the game.
