Pirates Game 9 Recap - Diamondbacks 10, Pirates 2

-Jonathan Sanchez wasn't overly great in his first start but he was still good enough to give good innings out of the backend of the rotation. Today was a totally different story. Sanchez was hit early and often and made it through only 3.1 innings and was basically left out there by Clint Hurdle to try and eat as many innings as possible before having to go to an already taxed pen.

-All told in his 3.1 innings Sanchez gave up nine runs (all earned) and eight hits while walking four and giving up two home runs. I think most people knew it might be a long way when with one out in the first inning and a runner on second he caught him with an inside pickoff move only to throw it into left field, nowhere near third baseman Josh Harrison, to let the first run score. Eight runs later and the disaster outing was over.

-Walking four guys in 3.1 innings is horrible all in itself but it got worse with Chris Leroux coming in right after Sanchez. He didn't fair much better overall walking four hitters including the first three hitters he faced which with the bases loaded really isn't ideal. He ended up going only 2.2 innings and while he was only charged with one run there were more on his tab as he came into the game with a few inherited runners.

-Bright spot is that the Pirates walked four times today. I know that probably shouldn't be news but with how poor this team is at getting on base that says something.

-Starling Marte with another strong game. His fifth straight game with a leadoff hit and ended the day 2-for-4.

-All told the Pirates did a pretty nice job in Arizona after a pretty horrible start to the trip. They won 2-of-3 games and while it would have been nice for the Pirates to complete the sweep I don't think most understand how tough it is to actually sweep a series. The offense wasn't great today but compared to the first six or seven games it was better and hopefully they can continue it after a day off.

-The Pirates get the day off tomorrow before taking on the Reds in a three game set on Friday.
