Penguins ECQF Game 6 Recap - Penguins 4, Islanders 3
-Oh man. Overtime playoff games take the life right out of you but when you realize the puck is in the back of the net for the team you cheer for there really isn't a better feeling in the world. I didn't get back to my apartment from work until about 15 minutes left in the third period but I was yelling at Mike Lange and the radio for the fist two periods then annoying the hell out of my neighbors with my irrational yelling at the TV. Anymore I don't really get all that excited for games but tonight was a whole different story. The Penguins fans needed them to win this game and while they played like crap for most of the game they were able to finish the series.
-Play of the game came from Tomas Vokoun with about five minutes left. The Penguins were still down one and the Islanders came down on a 2-on-1. Vokoun stood his ground and made the save. Just something that nobody is going to talk about but might have been the most important play of the game. From what I saw Vokoun played a pretty good game with some bad defensive lapses in front of him but with Marc-Andre Fleury playing some pretty bad hockey he was able to come in and help the Penguins move on against a pesky team. For the record I think that MAF should be in goal for game one against Ottawa but who knows what will happen.
-Evgeni Malkin was pretty invisible for the first two and a half periods of hockey but the final ten minutes of regulation and overtime he was the best player on the ice. He set up the final two goals and he was strong on the puck and for the game tying goal he took on the Islanders four on one and just dominated the play.
-Actually for the most part it seemed like the Penguins really turned it on the last seven minutes or so of the third period and most of overtime. It was finally good to see them take over a game but they smelled blood in the water after the Paul Martin game tying goal and then nearly capitalized.
-Sidney Crosby was disgusting in this game. He didn't score a goal but he came very close a few times with just jaw dropping plays. No idea how he doesn't score a goal on every shift. he is that good.
-This series was over in six but it was a tough series. Interesting stat is that the Islanders only led at the end of a period twice in the entire series. The Islanders really outplayed the Penguins for much of the series but just didn't get it done when they needed to. The Islanders were no joke and while some people want to do nothing but blame the Penguins I am going to give a lot of props to the Islanders for coming out and proving a lot of people wrong that they were going to get swept out of the series.
-Nothing more needs to be said. Brooks Orpik scored the game winner and while a lot of people wouldn't have expected him to score a goal that is how hockey goes. Sometimes the most unexpected players find the back of the net and that is just how it is. I am glad that guy plays for the Penguins.
-This just feels so good. The Penguins now have Ottawa coming up and while they have a goaltender that is infinitely better than what the Islanders threw out there I think the Penguins are going to have a weight off their shoulders by just getting out of the first round. This city was ready to burry Dan Byslma if they lost this series and if it went to a game seven it could have went any way but they didn't. They came out and won despite playing bad. I think they will tighten up and play with a weight off their shoulders and should be a much better hockey team going forward.
-Might have some thoughts on Ottawa tomorrow or Monday but I might not. I just want to enjoy this. Winning is fun.
