Pirates Game 37 Recap - Pirates 3, Mets 2

-Much like it has gone all season the Pirates drop the first game of a four game series and then go on to win the next three. They did that again today with a fairly big 3-2 win over the Mets with their ace on the bump.

-Matt Harvey came into the game with seven starts and only gave up more than one run in a start once. The Pirates got two off him today and nearly made it stand. They had to get another but the point is they went toe-to-toe with one of the best in the National League and came out with a win. Sure Harvey wasn't his best today but who cares. The Pirates got the win and that is all that matters.

-Jeanmar Gomez was good again today. He only went five innings and threw 65 pitches before coming out but that was because of some calf tightness that was probably a result of him getting hit in the calf earlier in the game. I will say that I was pretty sure it was Clint Hurdle pulling him because he is not stretched out but I was wrong so i guess I owe Hurdle an apology. Right? Who cares. I am not a huge Gomez fan but he has pitched pretty well the last couple of starts and with his next start lining up against the Astros I think he will probably stay in the rotation.

-Pedro Alvarez had a pretty nice day. Defensively he was really good and offensively he went 2-for-4 with the game winning single in the eighth inning. With two outs and runners on first and second he took an outside fastball and just went the other way with it. I wish he would do that stuff more often but it was good to see him have game, and series. In the four games against the Mets Alvarez was 6-for-11 so that was good to see.

-Clint Barmes was on fire today. He blasted a two run homer off Harvey and it seems as if he only can homer against top tier pitchers but it is nice to see him contribute in a big way for the Pirates.

-Jason Grilli was perfect in the ninth and Mark Melancon was decent today although he worked himself into some trouble but was able to escape. Eventually they are going to have an off night but it is a really nice to enter the eighth inning and know that you have pretty much a win in the bag with those two throwing.

-Michael McKenry is a great guy by all accounts and is only the backup catcher but with Russell Martin hurt it is really showing why McKenry won't ever be the guy. His bat is decent but defensively he is pretty brutal. He has been rally bad in his time here with throwing out base runners and he has had some problems this year blocking pitches in the dirt which cost the Pirates today and could have resulted in the Mets being able to tie the game late. Luckily they held on but this is kinda what I mean when I talk about McKenry not being "the guy."

-Really good win for the Pirates. A split would have been pretty meh for me but getting three of four here is pretty huge. Last year when the Pirates were battling late in the season they had a stretch of games against bad teams and they really struggled. So far this year it seems if they have got off on a better foot with this stretch of games against subpar teams. The Pirates get four with the Brewers starting tomorrow. Thankfully the games will be at PNC Park. The Brewers have been struggling with only one win in nine games since their series with the Pirates at the beginning of the month.
