Pirates Game 38 Recap - Brewers 5, Pirates 1

-Just another game against the Brewers for the Pirates. They kept it relatively close for most of the game but the defense and everything else just went down the tubes. No real surprise here.

-A.J. Burnett pitched well enough to get a win tonight but he got zero run support. Again. He went seven innings and struck out six with four of those strikeouts coming in the first two innings. Burnett actually worked himself out of some trouble early as he gave up a run and had second and third with no outs but was able to wiggle out of it thanks to some big strikeout pitches and a fly out to end it. Although he escaped with only one run allowed he threw 27 pitches which really put him behind the eight ball the rest of the night.

-Real problem tonight for the Pirates tonight was controlling the running game of the Brewers. The Brewers stole six bases on Burnett/Michael McKenry and it was ugly. At one point the Pirates pitched out and it turned out the Brewers were running on the play and McKenry's throw didn't come close to throwing out the base runner. Just bad times. McKenry was really bad again behind the plate tonight and cost the team numerous bases. Last year with Rod Barajas behind the dish McKenry looked decent defensively but now that Russell Martin is back there it really highlights how bad McKenry is. His pitch framing is pretty bad and he can't throw out runners to save his life. McKenry is a decent backup option for the Pirates but as I have said before when he is thrown into the starting roll you really start to see why he is just a backup. Tonight was one of those times.

-The Pirates had three errors tonight and should have been four if Pedro Alvarez would have been credited an error and all of those came late in the game. It just seemed that once things started to go bad around the fifth inning that everything went bad. Every close/fringe play went in the Brewers favor and it was just one of those nights. It just sucks that it happened against the Brewers that have really struggled recently.

-Clint Barmes has quietly has been really good. He had two more hits tonight and while the offense struggled he continued to hit well. Hopefully this continues.

-Just need to turn the page on this one. It was really ugly and while the game was close for a vast majority of the game you just never had the feeling that the Pirates had a chance. Marco Estrada has been below average for much of the year and came out and pitched a gem tonight. Tip your cap and come back tomorrow and get a win.
