Tony Sanchez Possibly Joining Pirates

Late last night Kristy Robinson had some scoop on Pirates catching prospect Tony Sanchez:

This is certainly interesting news and the guess that Russel Martin might land on the DL is a pretty good one. He has had some neck stiffness and while he did play a few games ago it is still giving him some trouble and bringing up Sanchez would almost seem like putting Martin on the DL is a certainty.

Sanchez was the first pick of the Pirates in the first round (fourth overall) in the 2009 draft. He started off strong in the Pirates system in 2009 and 2010 but a broken jaw in 2010 ended his season and really set him back a good deal with his hitting. He rebroke is jaw in 2012 and that certainly wasn't a good thing.

Here is what he has done through his minor league career:

Sanchez has struggled last last few years but has a very strong defensive reputation. To be honest I have no idea what the Pirates are going to do with him. I kind of hope that they actually play him and see what he can give them. While I think Michael McKenry is a decent backup catcher he leaves a lot to desire and if Sanchez can play the bat well then he can be an upgrade to the bench. What I wouldn't be surprised seeing is Sanchez coming up and not touching a bat and not seeing the field at all till Martin is back. That is a mistake. Like I said I don't mind McKenry but for the past few seasons every time he has had to play every day he has struggled.

Why not give the kid a chance and see what he can do? I certainly am excited to see it. I have been a little bit down on Sanchez, mostly because of his bat, but I am ready to look like a fool. I hope he does a great job and forces Clint Hurdle to play him and keep him on the roster. Anything that makes the team better is good for me.
