Pirates Game 88 Recap - Athletics 2, Pirates 1

I have been a little bit out of touch much of the past week with a trip back to Pittsburgh to take in the sights and some fun times with some friends and it seems like the Pirates haven't been winning a ton of baseball games recently. They dropped the first game of a three game series against the A's. Damn.

The Pirates lost despite collecting nine hits but only scored one run. Jeff Locke pitched another good game and gave up over two runs over seven innings and despite walking three guys he only gave up three hits. Locke deserved a better fate tonight but when you leave a small village (ten Pirates) on base and when they did get a solid piece of the baseball with runners in scoring position (they were 2-for-11 with RISP) late with the game much in the balance they were right at the A's outfielders. What sucks is that those hits came with two outs and the production in front of those hits just wasn't there.

Brandon Inge should not be on this team. He should be cut after the game and to be honest Michael McKenry should probably be next. The Pirates bench really gives them little options and when the Pirates are going to play short handed because they don't want to put Neil Walker on the DL then you better hope you have a good bench and right now the Pirates bench is really bad.

Really the Pirates inability to pick up some hits with runners on base was the telling factor in the loss. They just didn't get it done. The Pirates now have lost three games in a row for the first time since the first week of June. That sucks. That being said don't jump off the cliff yet.
