Pirates Game 89 Recap - Athletics 2, Pirates 1

For the second time in as many nights the Pirates offense couldn't do anything and they waste a solid pitching performance from Gerrit Cole. The Pirates lost again 2-1 and only had three hits on the night and while they only left four runners on base they didn't have very many runners on base. The offense is slumping in a really bad way and right now it is costing them games.

This was frustrating because Cole was really good tonight. This might have been his best start of the season as he went seven innings, giving up five hits and two runs. With two outs in the fourth inning a double and a subsequent home run (by Brandon Moss, former Pirate) and that was really all the A's could get off him. He was using his off speed stuff effectively and seemed to get into a groove after loading the bases in the first inning. Any run support would have been nice.

Just dreadful by the Pirates offense. This has been a problem recently so you can't really pin this on just a bad couple of games. The starters weren't getting things done and outside of Pedro Alvarez nobody was doing anything. I don't even really know what to say about it because it is just so frustrating to watch sometimes. The offense isn't going to be this bad the rest of the season and while losing four games straight is tough to swallow the offense is going to get better.

There are obvious problems with the bench and another oddity (maybe) is that when one guy is "on" offensively, everyone seems to be on. When one guy is "off" then the whole team seems to be off. Over the last two nights even if you had one more player having a better night at the plate both of these games could be wins and you wouldn't be seeing people talking as if the Pirates are competing for the number one overall pick.

The Pirates aren't the only team in the NL Central that is struggling. The Bucs have lost four straight but the Reds are 5-7 in their last 12 and the Cardinals are on their way to winning their fourth straight after losing three of their previous 11 games. By no means am I making excuses for the Pirates because they have problems that need fixed but as long as they can bounce back with a few wins I think this will be as easily forgotten as the 1-5 start to the season.
