Tonight was one of those games where when it is over you just lean back in your chair and say "well, at least nobody died." In the span of a 162 game season you are going to have games where you just get waxed. That was the Pirates tonight. They had staff ace Francisco Liriano on the bump and he just got hit all over Coors Field. He was able to only go 2.1 innings and was charged with ten runs (all earned) on 12 hits with two walks and only one strikeout. It was brutal.
It's not like the Pirates were dominated early offensively. In each of the first two innings they loaded the bases and collected six hits. The problem was that they only scored one run on all those hits (all singles) and just didn't get that one hit to take the lead or to really chip back into the game. It happens.
I guess if you want to look at any positives from this game it's that the bullpen did a pretty nice job picking up what was left of this disaster of a game. Vin Mazzaro followed up Liriano and went 2.2 shutout innings despite walking two and giving up two hits and Jared Hughes nearly finished up the game going 2.2 innings giving up only two hits and striking out two.
You might be curious as to who got that last out. The last out was obtained by Josh Harrison. Yes, position player pitching. The best. He threw 67 on his first pitch and gassed it up to 71 and was able to get the final out with a fly out. Things overall were bad but when you can get the position player on the mound you can smile about something. I thought this was a pretty good move by Clint. This game was way over in the third inning and while I am pretty sure none of the guys were going to be crushed about one game but to get Harrison, who has played pretty well the last couple of weeks, on the mound to throw a few pitches really was cool. Everyone was cracking up and it was a good time by all.
Outside of the whole position player pitching it most likely means that both Mazzaro and Hughes will not be available tomorrow but with Jeanmar Gomez being unavailable tonight you would think he could be good to go tomorrow and the rest of the pen didn't have to throw a pitch. When you starter goes only 2.1 innings and you only have to use two guys out of the pen you can consider that a win.
Otherwise you can just turn the page on this one. The Pirates have been pretty fortunate lately and one of these games were bound to happen. Turn the page and come back ready to win tomorrow.
