Penguins Game 3 Recap - Penguins 5, Hurricanes 2

Sometimes you don't have to play a complete game to win. Sometimes you only need a few guys to show up for your hockey team to win. Tonight the Penguins played a pretty good hockey game and while it was far from complete when you have a guy like Jussi Jokinen put more goals in the back of the net than the other team scores then you are going to be alright. That is what happened to the Penguins tonight. They were the more talented, and better team and it showed.

This game was pretty much all about Jokinen. To say he was really good would be probably a huge understatement. He is probably the most overlooked trade piece that Ray Shero got last year when Sidney Crosby went down with the broken jaw and he has just played some great hockey. He's scored 10 goals and assisted on four others since coming over and will probably go down as the best piece from the 2012 trade deadline.

I talked about the Penguins not playing a complete game and I guess that is just me nip picking. I think they really had a letdown in the second period where they allowed the Hurricanes get back into the game. The Penguins had built up a first period lead after Jokinen's first goal and then Paul Martin found the back of the net just a minute in the second period. I actually thought that this was the ballgame but, it was not. Carolina got a goal back on an unreal deflection from Eric Staal and then Nathan Gerbe tied it up just three minutes into the third period.

Luckily the Penguins turned it on. The Penguins got the lead back a few minutes later and closed it out later. Hell, Tanner Glass had a pretty nifty backhand goal over Cam Ward. I mean I gave Glass a ton of crap last season for his poor play but so far this year he has been really good. He has been noticeably better than last season which wouldn't be hard but for as many questions as I had about the bottom six to start the season to have guys like Glass and Craig Adams play the way they have is a huge asset.

Olli Maatta has been really good. Like they say this kid is 19 but his play is not what you would expect. He had a pair of assists tonight and has been just as good on the defensive end. Really solid night for him, again.

The Penguins power play woke up as they got a pair of power play goals after getting shutout in the first two games, so that was good.

Now, the Penguins really haven't played a good hockey team yet. They have gone up against a few teams that have struggled to score goals and teams that probably won't be in the playoffs so I have to keep reminding myself that tougher contests are going to come and there are going to be peaks and valleys but right now 3-0-0 is 3-0-0 and that is a good place to be.
