At some point when you are playing with a nearly half full AHL lineup in the NHL you are going to hit bumps. The Penguins have done an unreal job at winning games despite missing a lot of key pieces but tonight was just that time where everything seemed to go wrong. The first two periods the Penguins hung around but never really looked like they had a chance to get back into it. Ottawa tallied three third period goals and made this look on paper like it did live when you were watching it. Ugly.
The big takeaway from this game happened early. Sidney Crosby was making a move and was taken out with a good, clean hip check and as he went down he went right into Pascal Dupuis right knee. Dupuis did not get up and when he went off the ice he didn't put any weight on it.
This isn't going to be good for Dupuis. Your knee is not supposed to bend like that. I would be pretty surprised if he was back anytime soon, or even at all this season. The Penguins have dealt with some big time defensive injuries and they have been able to overcome because of the really deep pool of talent they have but the Penguins do not have much depth in terms of forwards. This is really going to stretch them thin and I am not sure they are going to be able to make it through like they have with the defensive injuries they've had.
This was just a "when it rains, it pours" nights. Those happen and with how well they have been playing and the cushion they have in the division this shouldn't be too much of a concern. Come back after the Christmas break and start to get back some of the injuries players and see what happens then.
Happy Holidays everyone! Enjoy the time with your friends and family. Also, Happy Festivus.
