This game pretty much summed up the Steelers season.
This gif pretty much sums up the game yesterday:
Yup, that is it.
I didn't see the game at all. I actually took the chance to go to Lambeau Field and see the Packers and Falcons play. I have lived here in Wisconsin for over four years and have set to go to Lambeau so I figured, why not? I will not be able to go when the Steelers come up here since I will actually be in Pittsburgh for Christmas so this was as good as any.
I didn't even watch the replay. I saw the final play with Antonio Brown and I saw the final touchdown (game-winning) by Charles Clay and that was about all I needed to see.
If the Steelers had a very outside chance of making the playoffs before the game then they have so much less of a chance now. The only thing the Steelers are playing for from here on out is draft position. I am not saying that I want to see the Steelers lose from here on out because I always cheer for them to win but that is what it has come down to.
From looking at the box score there were some bright spots. Jason Worilds has really put together some nice games recently with LaMarr Woodley being in and out of the lineup and while he has played some good games in the past that would be the extent of his good play, one game. He had eight tackles, a pair of sacks, and three tackles for loss. Dating back to the New England game he has seven sacks (six games) and has five sacks in the last three games. Not bad.
Cam Heyward was also good. He led the team with 10 tackles and also had a sack. There were a lot of people that were labeling him as a bust but he has also put together a good stretch of football for much of this year and hopefully he is coming into his own.
Ben Roethlisberger was good. 23-39 for 349 yards and three touchdowns is nothing to ignore but when the Steelers needed the offense the most they weren't able to convert in the fourth quarter and most of that will fall on Roethlisberger.
The defense was relatively awful from what I have read. The tackling by William Gay and Troy Polamalu on the Clay touchdown was embarrassing and while they gave up "only" 360 yards they gave up 10 points in the last five minutes at a point where the Steelers held a four point lead. They gave up big plays and big drives. They have been up and down all year and this game was a huge down.
The writing was on the wall for this team many weeks ago but a three game winning streak sort of blinded the reality of the season. I have a feeling there are going to be some significant changes after the season but for right now I am going to try and enjoy the final few weeks of watching my favorite team.
