This was the complete opposite of the previous few games for the Penguins. Against Montreal the Penguins dominated the game. Against the Islanders the Penguins weren't perfect but they won a 6-4 shootout. Last night the Penguins were taken behind the woodshed and they were beaten. Badly.
The Penguins were beaten in every aspect of the game. They were held to only 24 shots and even when they finally started to get some good looks later in the game, after they were already down 3-0, Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen was there to make the save and really make a three goal comeback feel like a 10 goal comeback.
The Penguins had nine giveaways and the Stars eight takeaways. This has been a problem all year. Nothing shocking here.
The guys over at [The Pensblog] had some really good stuff on the intro of their recap, namely talking about how top heavy the Penguins are and how Brooks Orpik hasn't been that good. I don't necessarily agree with them about the Penguins scoring too many of their goals on the power play but I think that is a much smaller issue. The Penguins score plenty of even strength goals and while they score a ton on the power play that is as bad as it seems to be on the surface.
The Penguins had a stretch where they played like one game in nine days and now they are playing a good bit of games. Tomorrow they play against Buffalo which will be four games in six days before getting a few days off. Buffalo is a pretty bad hockey team so hopefully they can get back into the win column and regroup.
