Pirates Game 2 Recap - Pirates 4, Cubs 3 (16 inn.)

What a weird game. I won't say the game was good but I can't really say it was terrible. There were the good times (Starling Marte tying the game in the 12th after Anthony Rizzo gave the Cubs the lead in the top of the inning) and there were bad times (Clint Barmes grounding into a 7-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and no outs in the 13th inning) but i the end Tony Sanchez sent us all to bed happy with a single that scored Jose Tabata.

This is the second time this season that the Pirates have gone to extras and that wouldn't be too much of a story if it wasn't the second game of the year. Extra inning games are going to happen over the course of a 162 game season but playing a game at 12:35 p.m. today so there are going to be a lot of tired bodies. There have been 26 innings in the two games. Yay baseball.

Charlie Morton really had a nice day. He went six innings, struck out six and walked four. He did have a little bit of problems with left handed hitters but looked a lot better against them and cruised for the most part and actually got more fly ball outs (six) than ground ball outs (four).

The offense wasn't all that good. For much of the game they had three hits and they finished with eight for the game. Marte and Jordy Mercer each had a pair but it was a rough time going for most of the game. Andrew McCutchen was 0-for-4 but he walked three times so there is that.

The bullpen, particularly Stolmy Pimentel, did a really nice job after Jason Grilli blew his first save opportunity of the season. Pimentel threw four scoreless innings giving up two hits and three walks while striking out four. He had some nice velocity on his fastball and stemmed the tide of a decent Cubs offense (15 hits) while the offense took its time getting ready.

I am not overly worried about the offense, yet. It has only been two games and just like what I said about the extra inning games above there is a lot of season left. I don't think the offense is going to be overly good but they are going to be better than they have been the last two games.

There were a lot more things to talk about in terms of Mercer, the bullpen, and instant replay but the game was over so late I just crashed and with the getaway game today for the Cubs I am going to keep this pretty brief. The Pirates won and they are in sole possession of first place in the NL Central. That's always cool.
