Game 72 Recap - Pirates 4, Reds 3 (12 inn.)

The Pirates had a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth inning. With Jeff Locke going six strong innings and Tony Watson and Mark Melancon pitching scoreless innings that really meant one thing for the ninth inning:

That run came on a 387 foot BOMB by Devin Mesoraco. I have no idea what it is going to take for Clint Hurdle to understand that Jason Grilli probably doesn't have it anymore, but that should have happened two outings ago. Grilli probably isn't a top-three option in the pen right now and yet he is out there in huge situations. Who would have thought that a 37 year old reliever would have his performance drastically decline. Evidently not Hurdle.

This game was on Hurdle. Sure the Pirates still won but it is utter inexcusable for Hurdle to think using Grilli was a good idea in that situation. He has been pretty bad all year and to continue to trot him out there is negligence. It's just so utterly frustrating to watch and think about that I am start to foam at the mouth as we speak.

This should be about it from Grilli. I would be really surprised if he isn't designated for assignment soon but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised that he is still the closer. Who knows anymore.

Thankfully the Reds were almost as woefully incompetent as Hurdle was today. They balked twice on the day, with one of them resulting in a run, and in the 12th inning Tony Cingrani worked the bases loaded before serving up a walk to Russell Martin to force in the walk-off winning run. That is right, shrimp time!

Lost in this game is going to be a 4-for-5 day from Clint Barmes and having him almost walk it off earlier in extra innings. Don't look now but Barmes is hitting .263/.341/.313 on the season. That is useful. On another positive note backup catcher Chris Stewart is hitting .269/.351/.284 and while he only has one extra base hit (a double) it is good to see guys like that being productive and not being a total black hole in the lineup.

The Pirates won on a shrimp and to be honest that takes some of the sting on what was another wildly frustrating game.
